Confirm your user is receiving email on their BlackBerry

Here is a great tip, for those of you who might not know it already:

To confirm that an end user is receiving mail to their device, send them an email with <confirm> as the first word in the subject line. You can write anything else in the subject as well, as long as <confirm> is there first. For example,

"Subject: <confirm> Test from BES Admin, OK to delete, no need to reply"

As soon as the message hits the user's device, a confirmation receipt is sent right back to the sender, without any user intervention required.

This is pretty handy when activating a user who you can't reach, to make sure they are getting mail to their device.

Sometimes you will get a confirmation back from yourself as well, so just be careful not to confuse that with one from your user.

That is a good tip that I use all the time with my users. It's usually the first thing I do when they say that they can send email but are no receiving any.

I use a little variation on this tip.
<$Confirm,RemoveOnDelivery,SuppressSaveInSentItems>
With the additional commands the email is automatically deleted once received and the confirmation email is not saved in the sent messages. In a nutshell, there are no traces of the test left in the users mail file.

I like your variation, Doug. It's, like, the 'ninja' version. :)

Joolie 10-18-2009 06:28 PM

Doug's like that. Very ninja-like. :-)

Is there a list of commands that can be executed from the Subject line somewhere?

Unfortunately the confirm command only works if the device language is set to English. It does not work with any other language.

I tried this but I'm the BES Admin and I'm not getting a confirmation email. However the user is receiving the message cause he's a fellow geek in IT that I tested with.

It definitely works, though even the Ninja-like way can take a moment for the client to register it. I equate it to the recall message feature in Outlook. If the person is watching their inbox, they may see the message pop in and then pop out.

Either way, a nice tool to have.

Can you tell me which device model and firmware version you have tested this on?

<confirm> is a nice tool to check if the backend and the providers networks.

if you get the Delivery confimation you know that the mails reached the Blackberry.

But this is not a confirmation at all, if the user can see the mail-
1st: it is still possible that the date/time/timezone is wrong, so the mail is sorted to the wrong day.

2nd: If the encryption key is not in synch the user will not find this mail at all on the BB, because the device is not allowed to show it, even it is on the device.

Another contact with the user is still required to confirm the mail delivery and disaplay of the mail.

Best, Scr
