Default Download Speeds from BlackBerry.com

After a while of having decent download speeds from blackberry.com, it appears they have once again dipped to the range of unacceptable. I tried to download the SP6 full package tonight from the TSupport Software Downloads and started out at 90KB/s. This quickly dropped to an average of 35KB/s.

The odd thing is that the same package through the software fulfillment channel, which is hosted on EdgeSuite, averaged 1MB/s for the 330MB package. Hosting the package for initial customers on EdgeSuite at uber-fast rates and then allowing them to download future updates through a much, MUCH slower website proves to be rather frustrating, if you ask me... especially if you're a paying customer with TSupport services.

Also, downloading from the AT&T BB software downloads, which is hosted on the blackberry.com domain, averages around 250-350KB/s.

Anyone else with similar experiences? I remember a few years ago when I posted about this, it appeared that EVERYONE had the same issues.

...and of course, the second I complain about it...

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /Downloads/entry.do.
Reason: Error reading from remote server

Yes, similar experiences here too.
I've always theorized that this is because RIM is in Canada.
Depending on current weather conditions, it may take a bit longer for the packets to actually defrost before they make their way into the US.
I suppose it got pretty cold up there last night.

I've the same problem and that's why I always call RIM T-Support and ask for FTP access when I need to download the latest service pack or full installer.

LMFAO! That is true, my wife couldn't unlock the door with her key last night it was so cold. There wasn't any ice or anything, just plain frickin cold. Today it's -8c but with wind chill it's -17c. We were hitting +14c last week and it dropped again. I wish spring would hurry up, I hate winter. If I'm not shoveling 3ft of snow I'm driving in it and people here cannot drive worth [email protected]#t, me excluded

Download speeds have always been an issue off an on with RIM. Customers complained about it when I was there as well. They must not load balance the servers well or something. Didn't matter to me anyways, I always got to download any HH or BES software off the internal network, suckers

Abe, they give you perm FTP access or is the information different each time? I am just curious as I will get my TAM to get me the access when we need to do the updates.

The access details are different each time.

The password changes because in certain situations they give people access to the FTP if they don't have TSupport. Like BES down and they don't have the right version of the BES install.

I'm not sure if your TAM will have the info, it' not something that they usually have direct access too. But they usually know someone where they can get it from, but they still might not get it. They shouldn't anyways as it's against procedure, but you might get lucky

TAMs are resourceful and do what they can for their clients.

In all honesty, the FTP access is still only in the 200KB/s range or so. What I don't understand is how you can download a full version BES service pack at 30-90KB/s (from the TSupport downloads section) and an AT&T Bold software package at 200-250KB/s from the same server. I believe they have some obvious bandwidth throttling going on.

I just don't understand how the TSupport downloads are just as slow as, if not slower than the public downloads... and how some public downloads are faster. I download from Microsoft at around 1MB/s, HP around 2-5MB/s, Symantec around 1-2MB/s, but I only get an average of 50KB/s from RIM's servers. If they don't have the bandwidth to serve downloads from their own servers, or if, as someone else jokingly suggested, that the servers being in Canada (presumably) and having some sort of network issues to the major US networks, then they really should look into external partners for hosting the downloads (as they do with software fulfillment downloads being hosted on EdgeSuite).

Just my two cents and a penny.

Port3101 external hosting we have mirrors of the KB articles already! Just kidding of course. I do see your point Otto, as a company that has prided itself on economy of data transmission they should be able to figure SOMETHING out.

Never had any problems with RIM's site, although I haven't really paid attention to the download speeds as much as you have.
