What about KB16118 - Turn on global catalog referrals in a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment

I'm not familiar with the specific KB, but is your issue that users can't send messages (get a red x) after DC/GC is rebooted/down/etc? We've seen the issue intermittently--RIM T support initially gave a kind of blow off answer (IMO) so we pressed it with them and got some additional info that still didn't explain it fully (I'll post it if you're interested).
FWIW, we've just rebooted the BES when the problem occurs. I am not a fan of that as a 'solution' but I haven't had time to delve further. We setup a MOM rule to alert us of the following event in the app log so we know before users call to complain. The thing that sucks about this is that you only get the app log event when someone tries to send and it fails. We have multiple BES, so I can test myself, but sometimes it will be fine on one BES but affect users on another.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: BlackBerry Messaging Agent <BESSERVER> Agent 3

Hdawg:
Similar to that but I am on exchange 2003.

jdizzle:
Yep restart of dispatcher does the trick too.

Blackberry agent MAPI profile has an entry to the Global catalog at
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\BlackBerryManager\dca740c8c0421 01ab4b908002b2fe182]
"001e6602"="GCServer.Domain.com"

Not sure if this will fix it or break something else. Might limit me to only one GC in the end.

Most of the time when one of the 2 GC's goes ofline/reboot the BES is not affected.
But happened today for the first time.

I just looked at that regkey on our servers--2 of them point to one GC, 1 points to another. I interested in seeing if the problem pops up on the corresponding BES again next time one or the other is rebooted.

We started seeing the problem back in August, but its intermittent--we check specifically when GC's are patched monthly and some months it breaks BES, some months it doesn't. Next time I am going to check this regkey before GC maintenance to see what happens.

I found another post that says to make sure 2 DNS servers are listed on the NIC.

But my NIC did not have the one listed that went offline.

I am wondering about redoing MAPI profile now.

If that KB is the one that's impacting my environment right now (glad to hear someone else is having the issues), it goes on to say that you need to apply the hotfix in Microsoft KB929439.

A MAPI program may not obtain a referral server when the global catalog server to which the MAPI program points is shut down

This involves both the hotfix AND the registry entry. The hotfix does not require a reboot of the server, but it does require the stopping of the BES services.

I implemented it last week after upgrading to MR3 and parallel with applying the PDF patch. Since then, I've had two of the issues where we couldn't send an email due to an invalid address (it's WSUS week, so a few of the DC's are being rebooted)... of course, I forgot to put in the registry entry

I'm very curious as to why that KB is showing access denied now, though.

I loathe calling MS for this.

If you still haven't called them, let me know and I'll send it. It's easy enough to use your Passport login to download it if you have support with them.

I did it through webchat, got it in 4 min. Not too bad.

Now to schedule the fix.

We've applied the HF and the reg key and are waiting to see if it makes any difference.

The whole pre-req about enabling GC Reconnect in the MAPI profile is confusing. Neither RIM nor MS seem to have a clue as to what it's all about.

See, the problem is the fact that this only recently started happening. I would say that we NEVER had this issue with BES 4.1 SP4 and I believe it happened only after we upgraded to BES 4.1 SP6. RIM seems to be pointing the finger at MAPI, but that never changed in our environment. Nor did our mandatory WSUS schedules (the domain controllers have always been rebooting when patches were applied).

Just curious, but are both of you running SP6 and only noticed it after upgrading?

Same here--never saw this problem in a year (maybe more, maybe less, but its been a long time) of running SP4; it definitely started sometime after upgrading to SP6.

Checked all my logs and when I upgraded 11-2007 from BESX Version 4.1.0.44 to BBES - Version 4.1.4.28 the error is in all the logs to this date.

Yes I keep too many log files, LOL
