Default Hard Delete and message tracking

Hi guys

I am mulling over setting Hard Delete reconcilliation for my BES 5.0 environment. I am also looking at setting the Message state DB higher than 100.

Questions I am unsure of are:

1)why is this not enabled by default? performance implication for BES perhaps? I want to set message state DB size to 500 for instance.
2)If delegates delete items from a BES users mailbox, does Hard Delete allow for removal of thse from the Blackberry smartphone (if it does, then I definitely enable it, most users are Senior status with PA's)

Tom

1. Not sure why it's not enabled by default. Probably because it wasn't a feature until more recent versions of BES. Maybe RIM felt it would be best to let admins turn it on if they needed it rather than simply force new functionality on legacy users.
Enable it. I've yet to see any downside or negative impact.

2. Yes, Hard Delete reconciliation would need to be enabled in order to allow a message to be removed from the handheld if it was removed from Outlook by a delegate.

We've had BES installed for nearly 11 years now. I plan on enabling this option once we migrate to the BES 5.0 environment. It will be a welcome change for some and not so much for others, but I agree with the lack of a real downside (aside from users simply adjusting to it at first).

We just shut our eyes and turned it on a few months back. Only a single call I can remember about someone who liked having hard deleted stuff hang around on his device. There's always those weirdos out there.

Cheers chaps, I enabled it and works nicely. If you're reading this I posted something earlier which I could do with a quick once over, if you have a moment

I turned hard deletes on and the user db to 1000. Everything works perfectly except when a user moves an email to a PST, it remains on the handset. Any pointers?

sitckybenson: We have this same question by obsessive compulsive emailers all the time at my company. Items moved into pst files can't be reconciled because the BES can't see the pst on the user's hard drive. The only way to reconcile is to use desktop manager and a USB cable.
One more thing, this can only be done on ONE set of archive folders (one .pst file) at a time. It can do all the subfolders, but only one archive file.
I personally don't care that my unread counts match precisely, but some people do, especially admins for high up execs.

Thats weird, it works when I move one to a PST.

Did you enable reconcile on device?

I agree. It should work when moving to a PST file. The "hard delete" support was not intended to reconcile only messages the BES can still see (that's what normal reconcilation does), but rather the ones it cannot see. For messages that are hard deleted, moved from the mailbox (PST, public folder, another mailbox, it doesn't matter), etc., they should find themselves a comfortable home away from the device after the reconciliation happens. I would expose the RefId for one of these orphaned messages (scroll to the header, hold in ALT and type VIEW) and then reference it against the MAGT log for that user to see what's happening.

as long as the message is still in the 1000 message cache it'll do its job
