Question SQL Server 2005 SP3

I'm fairly new to the BES Admin game and luckly have found this forum via twitter .

I have inherited BES 4.1.4 and SQL Server 2005 SP2.

I'm looking to patch SQL Server 2005 to SP3.

Having looked at the BlackBerry - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Compatibility

I notice the only compatibility tick is next to 4.1.6 but nothing else is ticked or crossed out.

I'm not sure if I can just run the SP3 update for SQL Server 2005 or if I need to upgrade the BES to 4.1.6.

I'm struggling to find stuff on the blackberry website.

So any advice or help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Jonny

For the sheer joy of a lot of the additional features from SP5 and SP6, I would upgrade the BES first and then upgrade the SQL. I don't believe you'd have any issues upgrading to SP3 on SQL, but I think the benefits from the BES upgrade would be more than enough motivation to upgrade it in the process.

What ^ said.

BES 4.1 SP4 while it may not be on the official support list will work fine ... upgrade to SP6 and all the MRs though cuz you should!

Thanks for the replies.

I've never done a BES upgrade and understandably I am a bit wary, is there any gotchas or a good guide out there as RIM's stuff is a tad confusing to a newbie like me!

In all honesty, upgrades are very, very simple. I would suggest taking a backup of the database prior to the upgrade. You will need to login as the BES service account to perform the upgrade. Prior to an upgrade (or really any planned service restart or server reboot), I personally remove users who are 30+ days inactive and purge any "large" number (> 50) of pending messages (listed as pending data packets in BlackBerry Manager), as this tends to allow services to recover much more quickly post-restart (it performs a rescan on all mailboxes to gather any status changes for messages during the downtime).

As for the gotchas, they were pretty much worked out with the later 4.x service packs and maintenance releases, from my own personal experience. We upgraded to SP6 a little less than a year ago from SP4 with no issues to be reported.

The words spoken by ^ are more valuable than you'll get from most anyone. Take them for the gold that they are.
