You are incorrect, DF. The investigation of Cam Newton is NOT ongoing. The investigation of the institution (Mississippi State not Auburn) is ongoing. The case is NOT closed and I will agree with you there. However, read the the NCAA release.

"Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete's involvement are determined."

That would seem to indicate that this portion of the case, as it involves Cam Newton, is closed. Of course, this is barring any sort of new evidence (err, actual evidence, as none has been provided thus far regarding Cam). Therein lies my comparison of Cam Newton's current status to ANY other eligible college football student-athlete.

At this time, the NCAA investigation is focused at the institutional level. Since Auburn was cleared, then it is pretty reasonable to look at MSU and their now-severed relationship with an MSU booster.

As for the Reggie Bush investigation, once again, READ the NCAA's release:

"The NCAA looks at each student-athlete eligibility decision based on its merits, because no two are identical. In the Cam Newton reinstatement case, there was not sufficient evidence available to establish he had any knowledge of his father’s actions and there was no indication he actually received any impermissible benefit. If a student-athlete does not receive tangible benefits, that is a different situation from a student-athlete or family member who receives cash, housing or other benefits or knowingly competes and is compensated as a professional athlete."

Taking into account the comparisons by the media to the Reggie Bush case, the president of the NCAA acknowledged that there is a HUGE difference between solicitation of improper benefits (Cecil Newton) and actually receiving these tangible improprieties (Reggie Bush and family).

As for the concept that Cam had no idea whatsoever, as much as you'd like to suggest it being far-fetched, I have one response - "WHERE'S THE BEEF?!" No evidence and no facts means that he did NOT know. We are a country based on a judicial ideology that people are innocent until proven guilty, correct? As you said, you won't condemn the kid until the investigation is complete. As of now, as far as Cam is concerned, the investigation about his eligibilty and him as a student-athlete is complete. No evidence came out to suggest he was part of the conversations. No evidence came out to suggest he even knew about it. So why are you condemning the kid, even though you said you would not do so? I'm not being an idiot taking the stance that he is innocent until proven guilty and that he did not know about what his father was doing. I'm being smart on taking that stance, as this stance is about as factual as you will get without trying to lay on what ifs and innuendos to a situation that has ZERO supporting evidence.

Man, that was a brutal game tonight... if you were a Gamecocks fan, that is. WOW! Going to Glendale! :)

mriff 12-05-2010 09:35 AM

War Eagle! Let's make it FIVE in a row. :D

djm 12-06-2010 04:38 PM

Are you going to attend the game Otto?

Otto 12-07-2010 12:57 AM

Already booked my flight and hotel. Unfortunately, my ticket connection (my father's friend) fell through and they decided to go (or make a lot of money off the tickets). We are only getting two tickets to the BCSNCG game, despite the fact that we now have 16 season tickets in our group (TUF-10 and TUF-6). Since the plan was to have dad use our two tickets for him and my stepmom and Brandee and I to use the other two tickets, that was all gravy... booked everything non-refundable without a concern.

Oh well. We'll get there one way or the other. I looked on eBay tonight and saw that upper deck tickets are running $700-plus at this point. I'm going to give it a few days and see if any of my connections pan out or if the aftermarket tickets lighten up (especially after the 17,000 AU tickets hit the market). If not, I will spend a bit extra and get lower level seats for around $900 each (if I'm paying that kind of money for tickets, might as well not be in the upper deck, right).

I seriously thought my dad might back down and give me his tickets, but... LOL!

By the way, we really know how to roll a tree... :) Timelapse video from Toomer's Corner after we won the SECCG. If you aren't familiar with the tradition, after each victory (any in football and big wins in most other sports) we "roll" (toilet paper) the Live Oak trees on Toomer's Corner, a busy intersection at the corner of the campus on College and Magnolia. This is a video from a camera at Toomer's Drugs.

Pelini's name is being tossed around for the Miami job.

Who will take Meyer's job? Mullen?

mriff 12-09-2010 08:01 PM

I think Foley needs to go talk to Jim Harbaugh.

Otto 12-10-2010 12:00 AM

I'm not sure Harbaugh is going to pass up the Michigan job. I think Mullen is the top candidate for the Florida job, though Petrino's name is being tossed around, as well. The rumor about Pelini is that he's not happy going to the Big Ten and is looking for an out. Malzahn's name is being thrown out too much for my nerves at this point. I'm really surprised not to hear Chizik's name attached to the Florida job considering his connection (as a former Gator).

mriff 12-10-2010 08:28 AM

Harbaugh needs to think about Meyer's situation when choosing between ND and UF years ago. That is, if he is considered. We all know how that worked out for Meyer. UF is loaded with talent right now. And they currently have a great class committed. They need to hire a big name soon and get on with it. But Foley knows that for sure.

I haven't heard that "rumor" about Pelini anywhere except in your post. On the contrary, Pelini is very excited to be going to the Big Ten, where Nebraska will be playing the teams he grew up following - including his alma mater. He has lots of family and friends in Ohio and around Big Ten country. Oh - and has put out an official denial of interest in, or plans to interview for; the Miami position.

Malzahn has officially been offered the Vandy job, although there are no reports yet regarding him accepting.

mriff 12-10-2010 09:13 PM

The reports I saw today are that Pelini has already spoken to Miami. Not sure if or why he would want that job.

Otto 12-12-2010 01:24 AM

Heisman trophy winner, Cam Newton. That has a great ring to it, right? :)

P.S. - I bought tickets to the championship game. Here's the view:

Enjoy Otto. Should be a great game. I hope AU dismantles the ducks.

And congrats to Cam. He's a hell of a talented football player. Pretty damn goofy to leave him off the All America team for the QB from Boise. I don't get that.

Ok, good insight. I agree that success will ultimately depend on who he surrounds himself with. He should send Addazio packing on the first bus out. Other than that, I'll look forward to see who he hires. The key here short term, is to maintain and wrap up his first class at UF. I also agree that UF is currently loaded with young talent. I'm glad they got the hire over with this quickly. We'll see.

Otto 12-12-2010 10:43 PM

Now let's hope that Malzahn to Vandy is not true... he has a bright future, but it is not in Nashville. His wife, Kristi, is an absolute blessing that relates to the players. The Malzahns love it in Auburn, so let's hope they stay for one more year. Expect Gus to be the highest paid coordinator in the country if he stays.

iam4uf 12-13-2010 11:35 AM

Wow, been a long time since I posted. I came here to get your insight on the UF hire. Looks like he is bringing Texas staff with him too.. I am just glad Addazio IS GONE.

Otto 12-14-2010 01:19 AM

I'm curious who he brings on as OC. It appears Applewhite is out of the running. I read earlier today that Kirby Smart was the leading candidate as the DC. That would be one hell of a hire! I think the Oklahoma State OC would be a smart hire, if he is available.

We nearly lost Malzahn to Vandy. OUCH! I'm glad better minds prevailed and he's remaining on the Plains for at least another season. WHEW!

mriff 12-14-2010 08:17 AM

Kirby Smart has been offered the job. He and Muschamp are buddies from previous jobs. And hell yeah, grab the guy at Ok State. He's been lighting up offenses everywhere he goes.

Thanks! Yep, the newly-constituted Big Ten starting next year looks pretty darn strong with the top 3 and 4 of the top 7, and its also quite obvious that what's left of the old Big XII consists of Texas/Oklahoma and the Little Sisters of the Poor - with Texas currently in danger of slipping into the latter category, if they don't turn it around quick.

For the past decade, only Ohio State from the new Big "Ten" ranks in the top 15. The SEC leads this category with four teams. :)

Big recruiting weekend for AU is coming to a close today. On campus were:

Savon Huggins, RB (5th/Scout, 7th/Rivals)
Christian Westerman, OG (1st/Scout, 3rd/Rivals)
Erique Florence, S (5th/Scout, 3rd/Rivals)
Jeremy Hill, RB (10th/Scout, 21st/Rivals)
Quan Bray, RB/ATH (19th/Scout, 16th/Rivals)

Huggins gave his visit a 10/10. Westerman says he loved his visit and his grandparents live only a few miles away on Lake Martin. Florence put Auburn in the lead over Alabama and USC and he is from my HS alma mater less than 15 minutes from AU. Hill said he enjoyed his visit and will likely be back in January with La'El Collins (OT - 2nd/Scout, 1st/Rivals).

Good news on all sides. This would be a coup if we pulled Hill and Collins from LSU and Westerman from Texas. All were early commits, but the shake-ups and rumblings in Austin and Baton Rouge, in addition to Auburn obvious success this season, are definitely helping us late in the process.

P.S. - Remember this post?

I'm not saying Westerman will leave Texas. A lot needs to happen in Austin for this to take place. However, the door has re-opened for us. Moral of the story: never underestimate the great taste of orange-and-blue Kool-aid. I find it quite humorous when things like this happen, though... :-P

Hey guys, Merry Christmas. And may your football teams kick some ass in their respective bowl games.

Otto 12-27-2010 06:54 PM

Merry Christmas to you, as well! I really cannot wait until some of the more interesting bowl games start... these other games, well... let's just say that I'm going to watch the Falcons-Saints tonight (and I don't watch pro football).

By the way, here's a photo of Auburn's trio of Heisman winners...

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and are looking forward to a Happy New Year.

Didn't know we were posting pictures of Heisman trios - but I can comply. Sorry my picture is 9 years old, some of our teams just get to the various achievement points earlier than others, I guess. (y)

So much for that. While it was an open and closed case about Taylor's father's company, Corn Fed, there was an open investigation about the connection.

What happened to Nebraska last night? They have become a completely different team on both sides of the ball. I know it was the Holiday Bowl against one of the worst bowl participants this bowl season, but the Huskers were simply embarrassing in their performance (or lack thereof).

Whoa.

Hey, what you guys think about the rumor on Charlie Weis and the OC job at Florida? I think that would be a hell of a hire.

Otto 01-01-2011 11:59 AM

I think he has proven that he is a bad head coach but a mastermind when given a single focus. I think it is a great hire, if it happens, but one that will be temporary at best.

mriff 01-01-2011 06:41 PM

The SEC owned the Big Whatever They Are today. Three and OH. (y)

mriff 01-01-2011 10:03 PM

Gotta admit, TCU looked pretty good tonight. And oh yeah, the Big 10 is 0 for 4 today. Not too impressive.
