KB15970 - Unrecognized file format error


Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software verison 4.1 Service Pack 4 (4.1.4) for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 4 Maintenance Release 6 (4.1.4 MR6) for Microsoft® Exchange
  • Service Pack 4 Interim Security software update



Overview

When viewing .pdf, .doc, .xls, or .jpg files on the BlackBerry smartphone or when using the Testing Attachment Service feature in BlackBerry Manager, the following error is displayed:
Unrecognized file format



Cause

Either the .dll files in the security update were not registered correctly or KB15766 was applied and not reversed before applying the Service Pack 4 Interim Security software update.
If HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BBAttachEngine\Distillers is checked on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the entry for the LoadPDFDistiller is missing.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
  1. Visit http://www.blackberry.com/go/serverdownloads to download the Service Pack 4 Interim Securitysoftware update.
  2. Extract BBDM_PDF.dll, BBRenderingDecorator.dll and BBXRenderingDecorator.dll filesand verify that the file version is 4.1.4.18 and not 4.1.5.18.
  3. Stop the BlackBerry Dispatcher and Attachment Services.
  4. At the command prompt, navigate to :\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\AttachServer\BBDistiller.
  5. Type regsvr32 /u BBDM_PDF.dll.
  6. Navigate to :\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\AttachServer\BBDecorator.
  7. Type regsvr32 /u BBRenderingDecorator.dll.
  8. Type regsvr32 /u BBXRenderingDecorator.dll.
  9. In the .zip file that you downloaded from the BBDistiller folder, extract all of the files and then copy and paste them in the BBDistiller folder on the computer.
  10. In the BBDecorator folder of the .zip file that you downloaded, extract all of the files and then copy and paste them in the BBDecorator folder on the computer.
  11. At the command prompt, navigate to :\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\AttachServer\BBDistiller.
  12. Type regsvr32 BBDM_PDF.dll.
  13. Navigate to :\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\AttachServer\BBDecorator.
  14. Type regsvr32 BBRenderingDecorator.dll.
  15. Type regsvr32 BBXRenderingDecorator.dll.
  16. Start the BlackBerry Dispatcher and Attachment Services.
