Default KB11232 - Cannot install a named MSDE instance for BES 4.1

KB11232 - Cannot install a named MSDE instance for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1
  • BlackBerry® Professional Software
  • Microsoft® SQL Server® Desktop Engine (MSDE)
  • Microsoft® SQL Server® Express Edition
  • Windows Server® 2000/2003
  • Windows® Small Business Server 2000/2003

Overview

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation program does not provide the option to install a named MSDE instance for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, but the BlackBerry Configuration Database must be installed with its own MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server instance.

Cause

A local version of MSDE with no default instance was detected on the computer during the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software installation. Windows Small Business Server often includes the following named MSDE instances:
  • BkupExec
  • SBS
  • Sharepoint
When this issue occurs, the installation will not be continued.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, complete the appropriate following steps:
Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
To create a named instance in MSDE

  1. Install an MSDE instance for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  2. Go to the Microsoft Download Center and install MSDE 2000 Service Pack 4. Note: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 release notes are located at the Microsoft Download Center.
  3. Locate the directory the files were extracted to. The default directory is C:\SQL2KSP4\MSDE.
  4. At a command prompt, browse to the installation directory.
  5. Type setup SAPWD=
    instancename=BlackBerry
    Note: To install a named instance of MSDE with mixed mode authentication (required for MDSS), type the following:
    setup SAPWD=
    INSTANCENAME="instance_name" SECURITYMODE=SQL
To create a named instance in Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition or Microsoft SQL Server 2005

  1. Locate the installation folder for BlackBerry server and find the tools folder.
  2. Within the tools folder, execute the SQLEXPR32 file.
  3. Once the setup has completed extracting the files, accept default settings until you reach window.
  4. When prompted to select what features need to be installed do not select any feature (all features should be marked with a red X).
  5. On the next screen, accept the default settings.
  6. On the error and usage report setting screen, select Next.
  7. Select Install.
  8. Select Windows Authentication.
  9. When presented with an option to create a new database or a named instance, select create a named instance. Note: If Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition was not your default database engine and this is the first time you have excuted the Microsoft SQL Server setup, you will not get an option to create a named isntance. To create the named instance in this scenario, execute the SQLEXPR32 file one more time. This time, you will get the option to create a named instance.
  10. Continue the installation and start the BlackBerry Enterprise Server when prompted.
  11. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to complete the installation.
Install and configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software

  1. Install BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 or later.
  2. When prompted, restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  3. When prompted to specify BlackBerry Configuration Database details, type the configuration settings listed in the following table.
BlackBerry Configuration Database details Configuration setting
Database location Local
Database information Microfost SQL Server name - <server_name>\BlackBerry where <server_name> represents the NetBIOS name of the Windows SBS
Database name <BESMgmt> where <BESMgmt> is the name of the BlackBerry Configuration Database
Data directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$BlackBerry\Data
Backup directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$BlackBerry\Data Database authentication Windows (Trusted)

Additional Information

To install a named MSDE instance that uses mixed mode authentication, type the following:
setup sapwd=
instancename=BlackBerry securitymode=sql

If you still have problems creating the named MSDE instance, install Microsoft® .NET Framework version 2.0 and 3.0 in addition to version 1.1, which should already be installed.
