Default KB17261 - Wireless Calendar synchronization is disabled after upgrading to 4.1 SP6

KB17261 - Wireless Calendar synchronization is disabled after upgrading to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 6

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Pack 6 (4.1.6) for Novell® GroupWise®
  • SDR281736
  • SDR126850

Overview

After upgrading to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1.6, wireless calendar synchronization is disabled for all the BlackBerry smartphone users. The following methods for restoring wireless calendar synchronization are not successful:
  • On the BlackBerry smartphone, Calendar > Options > BlackBerry > Wireless Synchronization is set ot Yes but the BlackBerry Enterprise Server rejects the change. Lines similiar to the following appear on the BlackBerry Messaging Agent log:

    [40000] (01/07 08:10:12.216):{0xD90} {Firstname Lastname}-UserControl::ProcessSLOW_SYNC-Wireless Sync is disable, reject Slow Sync command
    [40000] (01/07 08:10:12.216):{0xD90} {Firstname Lastname}-UserControl::ProcessSLOW_SYNC-Complete Slow Sync-Purge received records
    [40000] (01/07 08:10:12.216):{0xD90} {Firstname Lastname}-UserControl::ProcessSLOW_SYNC-Exits-bSuccess=OK
    In some cases, the setting on the BlackBerry smartphone is reverted within a few minutes. Any appointment created on the BlackBerry smartphone is filtered by the BlackBerry Messaging Agent. Lines similiar to the following appear on the BlackBerry Messaging Agent log:
    [40700] (12/15 12:16:20.265):{0x1554} {UserName} Receiving packet from device, size=117, TransactionId=-542454102, Tag=126, content type=CICAL, cmd=0x3
    [40000] (12/15 12:16:20.265):{0x1554} {UserName}-HandleAppointmentToSynchronize-Entering-Tag=126
    [40293] (12/15 12:16:20.265):{0x1554} {UserName} Calendar synchronization from device disabled. Appointment filtered, Tag=126
    [40000] (12/15 12:16:20.265):{0x1554} {UserName}-HandleAppointmentToSynchronize-Exit-rc=Error
  • In the PIM Synchronization policy group, setting the IT policy rule Disable Wireless Calendar to False and sending the IT policy to all the BlackBerry smartphones does not change the setting for the wireless calendar synchronization in the BlackBerry Messaging Agent after restarting. Lines similiar to the following appear on the BlackBerry Messaging Agent log:
    [30000] (01/06 14:02:18.373):{0x7A8} Current Date: 2009/01/06
    [30047] (01/06 14:02:18.935):{0x714} Calendar synchronization has been enabled
    [30049] (01/06 14:02:18.935):{0x714} Starting handhelds
    [40442] (01/06 14:02:19.560):{0x45C} User settings: email=Email Address, routing=S12345678, service=, device=123ABCD, calendar=0, MDS=1, userOTAFM=63, incradle=0, SMIME=0, sentItems=0, dir=UserName, server=PostOffice

Cause

If an auto signature is present in the IT policy, a function is called that sets the default value of User Wireless Calendar to False when the BlackBerry Messaging Agent is restarted.

Resolution

This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.

Workaround

Assign BlackBerry smartphone users to a new IT policy without an auto signature or remove the auto signature from the IT policy and then restart the BlackBerry Controller service. This will make sure the function that sets the User Wireless Calendar to False is not called.
As an alternative to the auto signature settings in the IT policy, a disclaimer for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance can be used. Using BlakcBerry Manager, a prepended or appended disclaimer text can be set in the properties for a BlackBerry smartphone user under Redirection > Messaging Options. A BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance-level setting can also be set to use in case of a conflict with the BlackBerry smartphone user disclaimer. To set a BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance disclaimer on BlackBerry Manager, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance name, go to the Server Configuration tab, and select Edit Properties. Click on Messaging and edit the disclaimer as needed.
