KB04882 - Best practices for installing service packs for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software
Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 to 4.1



Overview

This article contains recommendations for installing service packs for BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Each service pack includes the changes and hot fixes in previous service packs. A single upgrade can keep the BlackBerry Enterprise Server current. Use this article in conjunction with BlackBerry Enterprise Server product documentation.
Important: Refer to artricle KB05115 for information on installing or updating BlackBerry Enterprise Server remotely.
Complete the following tasks to install service packs for BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
  1. Download the latest service pack for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.
  2. Confirm and back up configuration settings and client access licenses (CALs).
  3. Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
  4. Stop BlackBerry Enterprise Server services and record logon account information.
  5. Install the service pack.
Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see article KB04789.

Task 1: Download the latest service pack for BlackBerry Enterprise Server
  1. Go to http://www.blackberry.com/support/downloads/.
  2. Click the Download link in the Download BlackBerry Software section.
  3. In the drop-down list, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version and platform.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Locate the latest service pack in the products list, and then click Download.
  6. Save the installation file to the desktop of the computer.
  7. Go to http://www.blackberry.com/go/serverdocs.
  8. Verify that all software requirements for the new service pack are met by referring to the Administration guide.
  9. The Release Notes include functional changes as well as fixed and known issues. Review this document in preparation for installing the updated software.
  10. Double-click the installation file after it has finished downloading and follow the on-screen instructions.
Task 2: Confirm and back up configuration settings and CALs
  1. Click Start > Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > BlackBerry Server Configuration.
  2. Copy and paste the following information from the BlackBerry Server Configuration tool into a Microsoft® Notepad file.

    BlackBerry Server Configuration tool location Data to record in Microsoft Notepad
    Database Connectivity tab
    • Microsoft® SQL Server® name
    • Database name
    BlackBerry Server tab
    • Server Routing Protocol (SRP) Identifier
    • SRP Authentication Key
    • Host routing information (if applicable)
    GroupWise Settings tab
    • Novell® GroupWise® server and port
    • Administrator user
    • Trusted application key
    • Application name (for Service Pack 3 and later)
  3. Save and close the Microsoft Notepad file.
Task 3: Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database
Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database using one of the following methods:
  • Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager
  • Open a command prompt on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Configuration Database and type the following commands: osql -E

    1> backup database besmgmt to disk = "c:\backup_before_upgrade.bak"

    2> go

    1> quit
Task 4: Stop BlackBerry Enterprise Server services and record login account information
  1. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. Stop each BlackBerry Enterprise Server service. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to the BlackBerry smartphone. For more information, see article KB04789.
  3. For each BlackBerry Enterprise Server service, complete the following:
    • Open the Properties window and change the Startup type to Manual.
    • Click the Log On tab. Record the account name in the This account field in the Log on as section. Warning: For the BlackBerry Attachment Service, always login with the Local System Account. Do not change this setting.
  4. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see article KB04789.
  5. Complete the following based on server platform:
  • For Novell GroupWise log in to the local computer only (Novell® NetWare® connections are not necessary)
  • For Microsoft® Exchange log in to the domain using the account specified on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services.

Task 5: Install the service pack
  1. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. Confirm that all BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are stopped. Note: If performing an upgrade in an environment where multiple BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances share the same BlackBerry Configuration Database, make sure to stop the services on all BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances while the first one is being upgraded. If the BlackBerry Configuration Database has already been upgraded and you are upgrading the remaining BlackBerry Enterprise Servers in the environment to the same version, the other BlackBerry Enterprise Server services do not need to be stopped.
  3. Open the folder where the .zip file was extracted.
  4. Double-click the setup.exe installation file and follow on the screen instructions.
  5. After the installation process is complete, make sure that all the fields in the Database Configuration Wizard are complete and confirm that the prepopulated fields match the previous settings. Refer to the information recorded in the Notepad file.
  6. With the Start Services option selected, click Finish. Note: If installing hotfixes for the service pack, clear the Start Services option before clicking Finish. After clearing this option, proceed with the hotfix installation. Refer to article KB04907 for information on installing a BlackBerry Enterprise Server hotfix.
  7. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services.
  8. Confirm that all BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are started. The startup type should now be set to Automatic.
  9. Open BlackBerry Manager.
  10. Select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance that was upgraded and click the Server Configuration tab.
  11. Confirm that the SRP status is Connected.
