KB14516 - Sending an email message from a BlackBerry smartphone in an IBM Lotus Domino environment

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for IBM® Lotus® Domino®

Overview

The following describes the data flow when a BlackBerry smartphone user sends an email message in an IBM Lotus Domino environment:
  1. When a BlackBerry smartphone user sends an email message from the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry smartphone assigns a Reference Identification (RefId) to the email message.
If the BlackBerry smartphone user sends a meeting invitation or calendar entry, the BlackBerry smartphone appends the data to an email message and assigns a RefId.
  2. The BlackBerry smartphone compresses and encrypts the email message and sends the email message to the wireless network, which sends the email message to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server over port 3101.
  3. If the email message is not encrypted, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server rejects the email message.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server accepts only encrypted email messages from BlackBerry smartphones.
  4. The BlackBerry Dispatcher decrypts and decompresses the email message using the BlackBerry smartphone user's unique encryption key.
If the BlackBerry Dispatcher cannot decrypt the email message using the encryption key, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server ignores the email message and sends an error message to the BlackBerry smartphone.
  5. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent writes to the BlackBerry state database.
If the email message is a new email message, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent creates an entry in the BlackBerry smartphone user's BlackBerry state database.
If the email message is a reply with text to an email message or an email message that the BlackBerry smartphone user is forwarding, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent looks up the entry in the state database to correlate the incoming message to the original message in the BlackBerry smarrphone user's mailbox. The state database contains a link to the original message. Because the BlackBerry Messaging Agent redirects only the first portion of an email message to the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent must locate and retrieve the full message text in order to send a reply with text or to forward the email message.
  6. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent sends the email message to the mail.box in the IBM Lotus Notes router for delivery to the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox.
If the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox is in the same IBM Lotus Domino domain as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent places the email message in the mail.box on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
If the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox is in a different IBM Lotus Domino domain than the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent places the email message in the mail.box on the messaging server where the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox is located.
  7. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent copies the email message to the Sent view in the BlackBerry smartphone user's mail file on the messaging server.
This step does not occur if the BlackBerry smartphone user has turned on Don't keep a copy for sent email messages and this setting is permitted on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  8. The messaging server routes the email message to all recipients. As a result, email messages sent from the BlackBerry smartphone are generally the same as email messages sent from the BlackBerry smartphone user's computer:
    • Email messages originate from the organization's email address
    • The BlackBerry Messaging Agent places a copy of each email message in the Sent Items folder if necessary
