Default KB14213 - Call logs, SMS text messages, and email messages are deleted on the BB

Personally, I'm a fan of John Clark's procedure ... but here is something official from RIM.

KB14213 - Call logs, SMS text messages, and email messages are deleted on the BlackBerry smartphone

Environment

  • BlackBerry® smartphone

Overview

Call logs, Short Message Service (SMS) text messages, and email messages are deleted on the BlackBerry smartphone. On the Status screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, the File Free field indicates low memory. Calendar items may also be deleted from the BlackBerry smartphone.

Cause

This issue may be caused by one of the following:
  1. A number of large applications are installed on the BlackBerry smartphone.
  2. A large amount of BlackBerry smartphone user data is present on the BlackBerry smartphone that cannot be removed by the Low Memory Manager.
  3. Media settings may be contributing to low memory capacity.
  4. An application has expanded beyond intended memory boundaries.

Resolution

Complete the appropriate resolution for the cause.
Cause 1
A number of large applications are installed on the BlackBerry smartphone.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
  1. Make sure that the BlackBerry® Device Software is installed on the computer to display the correct total application space.
  2. Determine the application space that is available on the BlackBerry smartphone by completing the following steps:
    1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
    2. Open the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.
    3. Double-click Application Loader.
    4. At the Device Application Selection screen, under the application selection window, note the total application space. Important: Select the List additional applications that are installed on the connected device check box to include the applications that are installed outside of the BlackBerry Device Software applications and the file sizes.
  3. Remove applications that are not required. For example, remove additional language packs and themes.
Note: Applications that are installed on a BlackBerry smartphone are stored in the flash memory. This limits the amount of memory that is available for other applications and application data.

Cause 2
A large amount of BlackBerry smartphone user data is present on the BlackBerry smartphone that cannot be removed by the Low Memory Manager.
Resolution
To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:
  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options > Status.
  2. Display the menu, and select Database Sizes.
  3. Reduce the number of items that are increasing the size of the database. For example, if the Address Book database is large, remove out-of-date contacts. If the Content Store database is large, move media files from the BlackBerry smartphone memory to a media card.

Cause 3
Media settings may contribute to low memory capacity.
Resolution
Modify the Device Memory Limit settings by completing the following steps:
  1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, click Media.
  2. Select a media application.
  3. Display the menu, and click Options.
  4. Set the Device Memory Limit to the lowest setting field.
  5. Display the menu, and click Save.
Note: Some BlackBerry smartphones have integrated cameras without a media card. As a result, some features have been added to handle picture storage on the BlackBerry smartphone, including the following:
  • Reserved Pictures Memory: In BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0, the default value setting is 10 MB. In BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 and later, the default value setting has been reduced to 2 MB. This setting reserves memory for pictures that the BlackBerry smartphone may take, and reduce the File Free amount that is displayed in the BlackBerry smartphone. This makes sure that the BlackBerry smartphone has memory available for pictures that are taken when a media card is not inserted in the BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: The Reserved Pictures Memory setting does not prevent the BlackBerry smartphone from exceeding the specified amount of memory.
  • Device Memory Limit: The default value setting is 20 MB. This prevents the BlackBerry smartphone from storing more than the specified amount of memory use.

Cause 4
An application has expanded beyond intended memory boundaries.
Resolution
Note: In the Java® operating environment, applications increase and reduce memory usage when the applications launch, run required processes, and close processes.
An application may use more memory than it is intended to use. For more information on how to determine the cause of excessive memory use, see KB15345.

Additional Information

  • The Low Memory Manager removes email messages and calendar items from the BlackBerry smartphone. For information about the Low Memory Manager, see KB02843.
  • For information on how to maximize the free space and battery power on the BlackBerry smartphone, see KB14320.
  • For information on how to qualify low memory situations on the BlackBerry smartphone, see KB15345.
