Overview
When attempting to send an email message, the BlackBerry smartphone user receives the following error message and the address lookup feature stops functioning: Transaction error. Message included an invalid address.
Cause

- The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) search is enabled but is not functioning correctly.
- The BlackBerry Enterprise Server has lost its connection to the Global Catalog server.
Resolution
Complete the appropriate resolution for your cause.
Cause 1
The LDAP search is enabled but is not functioning correctly.
Resolution 1
To resolve this issue, turn off the LDAP search by completing the following steps:
Note: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
- At a command prompt type regedit.
- Navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
- Set the value for LDAPSearch to 0.
- Set value for LDAPALPSearch to 0.
- Go to Services and restart the BlackBerry Controller. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
Resolution 2
For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 SP3 HF2.
Cause 2
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server has lost its connection to the Global Catalog server and did not receive a referral.
Resolution 1
This issue has been identified by Microsoft and a hotfix has been released. For more information, see article 929439 on the Microsoft support web site.
Note: As part of this resolution, Global Catalog server referrals on the Microsoft Exchange server must be turned on.
Note:
If the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has lost its connection to the Global Catalog server, you can restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or the BlackBerry Dispatcher and BlackBerry Controller service to reconnect to the Global Catalog server.
Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
