Overview

<content> This update will add a definition for the rules Disable Public Photo Sharing Applications and Disable Public Social Networking Applications to the Security Policy Group making these rules available in the BlackBerry Manager IT policy editor.

There are two methods for applying this update:
  1. Applying the Extensible Markup Language (XML) based update using BlackBerry Manager.
  2. Applying the Structured Query Language (SQL) based update using the BBDBUpdate.exe command-line tool.
Note: Both methods require the attached file, SocialNetworkingAppsPolicyPack.zip, to be saved to a temporary location and unzipped on the host computer.
<hr> Method 1 - Applying the XML-based update using the BlackBerry Manager
Use this method to apply the IT Policy definition updates if you are running one of the following platforms and versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 4.0.6, 4.0.7 or 4.1.2 through 4.1.4 for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 4.1.2 through 4.1.4 for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0.7 or 4.1.2 through 4.1.4 for Novell® GroupWise®
  1. Unzip the SocialNetworkingAppsPolicyPack.zip file to a temporary folder on the local computer.
  2. Open BlackBerry Manager, select the BlackBerry Domain node in the left-hand pane, and then select the Global tab.
  3. In the Tasks list, expand the Service Control and Customization task group and click the Import IT Policy Definitions task.
  4. In the File Open dialog, navigate to the temporary folder from step 1, then select the appropriate file:
    • If you are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 4.0.6 or later, select ITPolicyTemplate.xml from the XML-4.0.6+ folder.
    • If you are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 4.1.2 or later, select ITPolicyTemplate.xml from the XML-4.1.2+ folder.
  5. Click Open to import the definitions from the selected file. When the import process completes, you will receive the confirmation message The import of this IT Policy rule definitions file was successful. There were <x> additions and <y> updates.

Method 2 - Applying the SQL-based update via the BBDBUpdate.exe command-line tool
Use this method to apply the IT Policy definition updates if you are running any BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and later or 4.1 and later.
  1. Unzip the SocialNetworkingAppsPolicyPack.zip file to a temporary folder on the local computer.
  2. From a command prompt, change the current directory to the temporary folder from step 1.
  3. Use the BBDBUpdate.exe commandline tool in the root of the temporary folder to apply the appropriate file:
    • If you are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 or later, the input file will be ITPolicyTemplate.sql located in the SQLServer-4.0.x folder
    • If you are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 or later with a Microsoft® SQL Server® or Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) hosted database, the input file will be ITPolicyTemplate.sql located in the SQLServer-4.1.x folder
    • If you are running BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1 or later for IBM Lotus Domino with an IBM DB2® UDB hosted database, the input file will be ITPolicyTemplate.sql located in the DB2-4.1.x folder.
Tips for Method 2
  • To get a list of command-line parameters for the BBDBUpdate.exe tool, run the BBDBUpdate.exe tool from the command prompt without parameters. Review the usage help screen to determine what parameters will be needed for your particular installation.
  • The name of the file selected in Step 3 must be passed using the -input parameter.
  • After running the BBDBUpdate.exe tooh, review the screen output for any errors.

Will this work for 5.0? And if so, any instructions?

Never mind, it is built in to the 5.0 Policy. Although it does not remove the application, or prevent it from being installed. It does lock the application from starting up. Users will be prompted that the application has been disabled by there Administrator.
