KB04907 - Best practices for installing a BlackBerry Enterprise Server hotfix (GroupWise)

Overview

<content> This document contains recommendations for installing BlackBerry Enterprise Server hotfixes. Each hotfix includes all cumulative changes released in previous hotfixes for the service pack. A single upgrade can keep the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software current.
Note: Use this document in conjunction with BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Novell GroupWise product documentation.
Important: Refer to article KB05115 for information on remotely installing updates to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Additionally, the hotfix must be installed using the Local Administrator account.
Perform the following tasks in sequence to install a BlackBerry Enterprise Server hotfix on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  1. Download the latest hotfix.
  2. Confirm and back up configuration settings and Client Access Licenses (CALs).
  3. Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
  4. Stop BlackBerry Enterprise Server services and record the login account information.
  5. Install the hotfix.
<hr> Task 1
Download the Latest Hotfix
Complete the following steps:
  1. Go to BlackBerry - PDA Software Downloads - Support & Services at BlackBerry.com and click Download in the Download BlackBerry Software section.
  2. In the drop-down menu, select BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.0 for Novell GroupWise or BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.1 for Novell GroupWise and click Next.
  3. Locate the latest hotfix in the products list and click Download.
  4. Save the installation file to the hard disk.
  5. Extract the .zip file to a subfolder. The software will be installed from this folder.
  6. Review the hotfix release notes detailing the issues addressed in the hotfix.
<hr> Task 2
Confirm and Back Up Configuration Settings and CALs

Complete the following steps:
  1. Click Start > Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > BlackBerry Server Configuration.
  2. Record the following Server Routing Protocol (SRP), Microsoft® SQL Server®, and Novell GroupWise data from the BlackBerry Server Configuration tool into a Notepad (.txt) file.

  3. Save and close the Notepad (.txt) file.
  4. On the computer hosting the BlackBerry Configuration Database, open a command prompt.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following: C:\BCP BESMgmt..licensekeys out C:\keys.txt -c -T
  6. Copy the keys.txt file to the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
<hr> Task 3
Back Up the BlackBerry Configuration Database
Back up the BlackBerry Configuration Database using one of the following methods:
  • Use Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
OR
  • Open a command prompt on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Configuration Database and type the following commands:
osql -E
1> backup database besmgmt to disk = "c:\backup_before_upgrade.bak"
2> go
1> quit
<hr> Task 4

Stop BlackBerry Enterprise Server Services and Record Logon Account Information
Complete the following steps:
  1. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. Stop each BlackBerry Enterprise Server service.
  3. For each BlackBerry Enterprise Server service, do the following:
    1. Open the Properties window and change the Startup type to Manual.
    2. Click the Log On tab. Record the account name in the This account: field in the Log on as: section.
Warning: For the BlackBerry Attachment Service, always log on with the Local System Account. Do not change this setting.
  1. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see article KB04789.
  2. Log in to the local computer only, using the account specified for BlackBerry services. Novell® NetWare® connections are not necessary.
<hr> Task 5
Install the Hotfix
Complete the following steps:
  1. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. Confirm that all BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are not started. They should still be set to start manually.
  3. Open the subfolder to which the .zip file was extracted.
  4. Double-click the .msp file to start the installation.
  5. After the installation process is complete, complete the BlackBerry Configuration Database wizard.
Note: Make sure that all the fields in the BlackBerry Configuration Database wizard are complete and confirm that the pre-populated fields match the previous settings. Refer to the information you recorded in the Notepad file.
  1. With the Start Services option selected, click Finish.
  2. In the Control Panel, go to Administrative Tools > Services.
  3. Confirm that all BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are started. The startup type should now be set to Automatic.
  4. Open BlackBerry Manager.
  5. Select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance that was upgraded and click the Server Configuration tab.
  6. Confirm that the SRP Status is Connected.
