Default KB03493 - Run the Userdump.exe utility to capture the state of a BES process

KB03493 - Run the Userdump.exe utility to capture the state of a BlackBerry Enterprise Server process

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 3.6 and later
Background
In earlier versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, an external User Mode Process Dump Service was used to monitor the BlackBerryserver.exe file for access violations. Userdump was incorporated into the BlackBerry Enterprise Server in version 3.6.

Overview

The following are instructions to set up UserDump to capture the state of a BlackBerry Enterprise Server process.
  1. Download the latest version of the UserDump utility from the Microsoft web site.
  2. After the extraction process is complete, locate the setup.exe file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
  3. During the installation, select the option Install (or upgrade) User Mode Process Dump on this computer, and then click Next.
  4. In some instances after the installation, you will be prompted to restart the computer. If you are prompted to restart, select Yes.
  5. Configure UserDump to run the Userdump.exe utility to capture the state of a BlackBerry Enterprise Server process if the BlackBerry Enterprise Server stops responding.
Procedure
The Userdump utility catches access violation errors that happen when the BlackBerry Enterprise Server stops responding. To catch the violation errors, you need to edit the Windows® registry settings and replace Dr. Watson (the default utility) with Userdump.
To modify the registry settings, complete the following steps:
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
  1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run. Type regedit and then click OK.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug .
  3. In the Value data field of the Debugger registry entry, type c:\WINNT\system32\kktools\userdump.exe -k %ld Note: This tells the Dr. Watson program to start Userdump. In this example, it will invoke userdump.exe with the -k %ld switch.
  4. Click OK.
  5. In the Value data field of the Auto registry entry, type 1 to run Userdump automatically, and then click OK.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
After Userdump is configured, it will dump the memory content for the process to a DMP file when an access violation happens. The dump file is placed in the same directory as the userdump.exe file (the default location is C:\WINNT\system32).
Note: If you run the userdump.exe file at a command prompt, you will display a help screen and all active processes.

Additional Information

You can download the latest version of the Userdump utility from the Microsoft web site.
Note: Userdump is part of a larger package and has its own directory. Once installed, you can run the setup.exe file in the Userdump directory.
For more information on memory dump file options, see Microsoft Support Knowledge Base article 254649.
