KB10212 - Error "MAPI error 8004010f" appears when the Microsoft Exchange permissions or Mapi32.dll need to be updated

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry smartphone

Overview

The Windows® Application logs and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server logs on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server are logging the following warning or error:
MAPI error 8004010f

Cause

Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) error code 8004010f is a MAPI warning of MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND and can be caused by several operations. Regardless of what operation was intended, this error indicates that the Microsoft Exchange Server could not find the required entry at the specified location in the mailbox (such as an email message or calendar appointment).
Examples of operations that can cause this error message include:
  • The BlackBerry smartphone user has moved the entry. This may have been a manual move, an automatic move based on filtering rules, or during an archive operation. This error will also occur frequently for BlackBerry smartphone users who use a filtering rule on their messaging client to move new messages directly to .pst files.
  • The mailbox was moved to a new Microsoft Exchange Server and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server tried to load the mailbox from the old server.
  • Name resolution is failing because the Microsoft Exchange Server cannot connect to the Global Address List (GAL) server and is not attempting to contact another. This might happen if the GAL server is turned off or because a network issue prevents communication.
The MAPI error code 8004010f is one of a series of MAPI codes that illustrate a failed attempt by the the Microsoft Exchange MAPI Subsystem to complete a task. A list of MAPI error codes can be found in article 238119 on the Microsoft Support page.

Resolution

While this error message might not be of concern due to regular Microsoft Exchange tasks and BlackBerry Enterprise Server tasks requesting information that may have already been deleted or moved, it is still a good idea to check the following steps for an updated environment.
  • On the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, check which Windows account that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services are running under:
    1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
    2. Right-click BlackBerry Dispatcher.
    3. Click Properties.
    4. On the Logon tab, make note of the account in the This account field.
  • Validate permissions for the environment for the account found in Step 1. Check the permissions for the account. For directions, see KB02276.
Note: You can find further information on the Permissions section of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Installation Guide for your version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. If you are running your BlackBerry Enterprise Server services as a Domain Administrator Account (or an account other than the BlackBerry Enterprise service account), it is recommended that the service account be switched as per KB04293 (for BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 4.0 and 4.1 only).
  • Validate which versions of MAPI32.DLL are running on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
    1. Search the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MAPI32.DLL.
    2. Right-click the versions that are found and select Properties.
    3. Click Version and verify that the version of MAPI32.DLL on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is equal to, or higher than, the version on the computer hosting the Microsoft Exchange Server. The versions registered are usually the files that are found in the Exchsrvr\bin directory or the WINDOWS\System32 directory.
Note: If the version on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is not equal to, or higher than the version on the computer hosting the Microsoft Exchange Server, apply the same service packs and updates that are on the computer hosting the Microsoft Exchange Server to the computer hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
