Default KB12304 - Migrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to new hardware

KB12304 - Migrate the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to new hardware

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 3.6 to 4.1.6 for Microsoft® Exchange

Overview

The following article is an explanation of available methods for migrating the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server to new hardware. These methods assume that you are migrating within the same Microsoft® Exchange environment. If that is not the case, see KB02060 for more information.
Method 1 - Migration using multiple servers
This process allows for phased migration of users between multiple versions of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, if required in the environment. Two Server Routing Protocol (SRP) Identifiers are necessary to complete migration using multiple servers.
The following steps outline this procedure:
  1. On the new hardware that is being installed with the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server, ensure that all prerequisites for the new version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server have been met. For more information, refer to the Installation Guide for your version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server. See KB11842 for more information.
  2. Ensure the database server that hosts the BlackBerry Configuration Database of the old BlackBerry Enterprise Server meets the requirements for the version you plan to install.
  3. Install the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server. When asked for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server name, ensure it is different from the existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance's name.
  4. During the configuration phase of the installation, direct the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance to the existing BlackBerry Configuration Database from the old BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance and upgrade it if needed.
  5. Enter the second SRP Identifier and SRP Authentication Key for the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance. Note: Once this installation is complete, the two BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances are sharing Client Access Licences (CALs), so there will be no need to purchase or move the licences.
  6. Once the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance is installed, if it was a later version then the old BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance, all user management tasks should be handled from the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance.
  7. If an earlier version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (prior to software version 4.1) is being moved to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 or later, open the Legacy Management Console on the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance.
  8. Find the first user to be moved, right-click on the user's name, and select the Move User option. Move the user to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance.
  9. If moving to a version prior to BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1, open the BlackBerry Manager on the newest installed version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that is currently running. Find the user on the old BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance, right click user's name and select the Move User option to move the user to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance. Note: At this point, if the user has a BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 or later, it will be updated with the new SRP Identifier. If the BlackBerry smartphone is running BlackBerry Device Software prior to 4.0, it will need to be cradled to receive the update to the SRP Identifier.
  10. Once all the BlackBerry smartphone users are moved, the old BlackBerry Enterprise Server instance can be decommissioned and removed from the database.
Method 2 - Knife-edge cutover (minimal downtime)
This method should be used if moving between hardware but maintaining the BlackBerry Enterprise Server version. If this is the case, refer to the appropriate knowledge base article for your version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Method 3 - Knife-edge cutover and upgrade
This method should be used if new hardware needs to be moved or the BlackBerry Enterprise Server needs to be upgraded, but there is no second SRP Identifier. For this method, perform an in-place upgrade of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to the desired version, then perform a knife-edge cutover of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software to the hardware.

Additional Information

For more information on a knife-edge cutover for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6, see KB05032.
For more information on a knife-edge cutover for BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 and 4.1, see KB10278.
