KB05032 - How to do a knife-edge cutover from BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6

Overview

<content> To perform a knife-edge cutover from one version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 to another (for example, to move from one computer to another and to upgrade from 3.6 Service Pack 1 to 3.6 Service Pack 2), complete the following tasks:
  1. Install the same Microsoft Exchange environment present in the existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  2. Back up and restore the BlackBerry Configuration Database on the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  3. Gather the necessary information that will be needed to migrate to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  4. Assign the appropriate permissions to the service account.
  5. Install the same BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version on the new computer that is installed on the existing BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  6. Import the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services.
<hr> Task 1
On the new network computer, install the same Microsoft Exchange environment that is presently running on the computer on which the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is installed. For instructions, see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 for Microsoft Exchange: Installation and Getting Started Guide.
Note: Make sure you install the appropriate version of Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) or Microsoft SQL Server™.
<hr> Task 2
Back up and restore the BlackBerry Configuration Database on the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server. For instructions on how to back up and restore the BlackBerry Configuration Database, see KB03112.
<hr> Task 3
Gather the necessary information that will be needed to migrate to the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  1. Log in to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server using the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration account (for example, BESAdmin).
  2. In the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console, right-click BlackBerry Server Management, then click Export BlackBerry Servers. Click Yes to include Server Routing Protocol (SRP) settings and save the file.
  3. Right-click BlackBerry Server Management, then click Properties.
  4. From the Database tab, record the following information:
    • BlackBerry Enterprise Server name
    • BlackBerry Configuration Database name
    • Authentication Method
    • User Name and Password (if SQL Authentication is used)
  5. From the License tab, record the client access license (CAL) keys.
  6. From the left pane of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console, record the BlackBerry Enterprise Server name.
  7. Right-click the BlackBerry Enterprise Server name, then click IT Policy. Record any set IT policies and the BlackBerry device users that belong to each IT Policy group.
  8. In Administrative Tools of the Control Panel, double-click Services, then right-click BlackBerry Server <server_name> Service, and click Properties.
  9. From the Logon tab, record the account for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server service. Make sure you also have the password for this account.
  10. Click Start > Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > Edit the MAPI profile for, then record the name of the two currently displayed Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profiles. Open both MAPI profiles, then record the Microsoft Exchange Server name and mailbox name for each one.
  11. To open the Registry Editor, click Start > Run, type regedit and press ENTER.
  12. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Servers\<blackberry_enterprise_server_name></blackberry_enterprise_server_name>, then record the values of the TCPPort and NetworkAccessNode registry keys.
  13. Close the Registry Editor and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console.
<hr> Task 4
Assign the appropriate permissions to the service account. For instructions on assigning permissions, please see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 for Microsoft Exchange: Installation and Getting Started Guide.
<hr> Task 5
On the new network computer, install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version that is presently running. For example, if you are currently running BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 Service Pack 1, install software version 3.6 Service Pack 1 on the new computer as well. For instructions, see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 3.6 for Microsoft Exchange: Installation Guide.
Important: Be sure to use the information recorded in Task 3 of this article to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
<hr> Task 6
Import the BlackBerry Enterprise Servers into the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server and restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services.
  1. In the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management console, right-click BlackBerry Server Management, then click Import BlackBerry Servers. Note: This refers to the file exported in Task 3 step 2.
  2. On the original BlackBerry Enterprise Server, stop all BlackBerry Enterprise Server services and set the startup types to Disabled.
  3. On the new BlackBerry Enterprise Server, start the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. Refresh the BlackBerry Manager to see the existing BlackBerry device users list.
Important: Restarting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry devices. For more information, see KB04789.
