Default KB11842 - Software requirements for BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Exchange

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange®

Overview

To make sure that the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation meets basic software requirements, perform the following tasks:
  1. Verify software configuration
  2. Verify permissions configuration
Task 1 - Verify Software Configuration
To run BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange software, specific software requirements must be met. However, if any third-party or BlackBerry Enterprise Server software is updated in the environment, the software requirements for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server may also need to be updated.
Software Prerequisites
The following software prerequisites must be met:
  1. Operating system
  2. Exchange Administrator or Exchange System Manager
  3. Microsoft® SQL Server® Desktop Engine (MSDE) or Microsoft SQL Server
  4. Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)
  5. Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) and Software Development Kit (SDK)
  6. Java*® Runtime Environment (JRE™)
  7. Microsoft .NET Framework
  8. Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ)
Operating system
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires a server-level operating system. It cannot be installed on a workstation. The following operating systems are supported:
  • Microsoft Windows NT® Server 4.0 (for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6 or earlier only)
  • Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server and Advanced Server Service Pack 4
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise, Standard, and Small Business Server (or later)
Exchange Administrator or Exchange System Manager
This requirement is based on the version of Microsoft Exchange being used in the environment. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version should always be at an equal or newer version of Exchange Administrator (Microsoft Exchange 5.5) or Exchange System Manager (Microsoft Exchange 2000 and Microsoft Exchange 2003). To verify this, complete the following steps:
  1. On the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, search for the following files:
    • CDO.dll
    • EMSMDB32.dll
    • MAPI32.dll
  2. Record the locations and versions of the files.
  3. Repeat this process on the Microsoft Exchange Server (if there are multiple Microsoft Exchange Servers in the environment, repeat the process for all instances).
  4. If the file versions that exist on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server are not equal to or newer than those on the Microsoft Exchange Server, they must be upgraded on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires Microsoft SQL Server version 8.00.760 or later in order to function correctly. MSDE 2000 Release A and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 both include the minimum version of Microsoft SQL Server.
Note: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 is only supported by BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1. However, BlackBerry® Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) and BlackBerry Mobile Data Service do not support Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires the ability to access the Microsoft SQL Server Database using either TCP/IP or the Named Pipes protocol. To verify that the protocols are enabled, complete the following steps:
On Microsoft SQL Server or MSDE 2000
  1. Log in to the computer hosting the MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server installation.
  2. Click Start > Run.
  3. Type svrnetcn and click OK.
  4. In the Microsoft SQL Server Network Configuration Utility, verify that TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled.
On Microsoft SQL Server 2005
  1. Log in to the computer hosting the Microsoft SQL Server installation.
  2. Click Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  3. Expand Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
  4. Select Protocols for <service name> where service name is the name of the Microsoft SQL 2005 Service as it appears in your Services Manager.
  5. Confirm that Named Pipes and TCP/IP are both enabled.
MDAC
MDAC is the software that allows the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to connect to the Microsoft SQL Server database. It is used by several BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. The latest BlackBerry Enterprise Server version requires MDAC version 2.8 Service Pack 1. To check the version of MDAC you are using, see KB03259.
Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) and SDK (for BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.x)
Several BlackBerry Enterprise Server services use the Microsoft XML Parser and SDK to format data correctly. The minimum required version is 4.10.9404.0. To check the version that is installed, complete the following steps:
  1. In Add or Remove Programs, search for an entry for Microsoft XML Parser and SDK.
  2. Click the Support Information link for the entry. The version number should appear. If the Microsoft XML Parser and SDK do not appear on the list of programs, or it is below the required version, install the minimum version of the software.
JRE
The BlackBerry Mobile Data Service (or the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service, depending on the version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server) uses the JRE and cannot function without it. The JRE is needed for the BlackBerry® Browser and also allows for the ability to wirelessly push applications. Install the appropriate JRE version for your environment.
  • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 3.6 and 4.0, JRE version 1.4.2_11 is required.
  • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1, JRE version 1.5.0_04 (or later) is required.
To check the JRE version, complete the following steps:
  1. In Add or Remove Programs, find and record all the JRE versions that are installed.
  2. Make sure that at least one of the Java installations listed in the programs list is the correct version for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. See KB02283 for more information.
Microsoft .NET Framework (BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 only)
The Microsoft .NET Framework is required for some of the features of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server only supports .NET version 1.1 Service Pack 1; version 2.0 is not supported. To check the version of .NET, complete the following steps:
  1. In Add or Remove Programs, look for Microsoft .NET Framework. The software version appears in the application name.
  2. If Microsoft .NET Framework is lower than the minimum required version, install a supported version.
Microsoft Message Queuing
MSMQ is used by the BlackBerry Collaboration Service to manage the connection to the instant messaging environment. To check that it is correctly installed, complete the following steps:
  1. In Add or Remove Programs, select the Add or Remove Windows Components option.
  2. Select the Application Server option and click Details.
  3. Select the Message Queuing option and click Details.
  4. Verify that the check box for Common is selected.

Task 2 - Verify the Permissions Configuration

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration or service account requires specific permissions within the Microsoft Exchange environment. Do not use different permissions; certain group memberships deny permissions, preventing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server from functioning. To check if an administration account is used for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, complete the following:
  1. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
  2. Locate the BlackBerry Dispatcher Service (in BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0 and 4.1) or BlackBerry Server Service (in BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6), then right-click the service and select Properties.
  3. Click the Log On tab and confirm that an administration account is specified. If an administration account is not specified, one must be specified. To specify an administration account, refer to the appropriate article below:
    • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software versions 4.0 and 4.1, see KB04293.
    • For BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6, see KB04334.
  4. The administration account must have the required permissions. Refer to the table below.
Permission Type Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003 Microsoft Exchange 5.5
Local Local Administrator, Log on as a Service, and Log on Locally Local Administrator, Log on as a Service, and Log on Locally
Domain Domain User, Active Directory Send As permission, and Builtin/Administrator N/A
Microsoft Exchange Exchange View Only Administrator, Administer Information Store, Receive As, and Send As Server Account Admin on the Site and Configuration level

Additional Information

For instructions on how to upgrade the required software, see KB12184.
