Default KB17760 - BlackBerry smartphone users are able to run apps after being disabled

KB17760 - BlackBerry smartphone users are able to run Facebook, Picasa Web Albums and Google Talk on BlackBerry smartphones after the applications have been disabled using Software Configuration

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1
  • Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • Google Talk™ for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • Picasa® Web Albums for BlackBerry® smartphones

After disallowing Facebook, Picasa Web Albums and Google Talk for BlackBerry smartphones, BlackBerry smartphone users are still able to run these applications on their BlackBerry smartphones.
The applications were disallowed by creating a new configuration in Software Configuration on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The new configuration was associated with an Application Control policy (Software Configuration) with the Disposition set to Disallowed. Also, the IT policy value Disable RIM Value-Added Applications was set to True.

This behaviour is by design because Facebook, Picasa Web Albums and Google Talk for BlackBerry smartphones are considered RIM Value-Added Applications. To disable the functionality of these applications, you must change the IT policy.

To disable the usage of these applications on BlackBerry smartphones, perform the following steps on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server:
  1. In BlackBerry Manager select BlackBerry Domain.
  2. Select the Global tab and then click Edit Properties.
  3. Under Properties, highlight IT Policy and on the right, double-click IT Policies.
  4. Highlight the appropriate IT Policy and then click the Properties button.
  5. Under Security policy group, set Disable Public Photo Sharing Applications to True, and set Disable Public Social Networking Applications to True.
  6. Under Service Exclusivity policy group, set Allow Public Google Talk Services to False.

Additional Information

The IT policy Disable RIM Value-Added Applications does not apply to some instant messaging clients, such as the following:
  • Yahoo!® Messenger for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • Windows Live™ Messenger for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • AOL® Instant Messenger™ service (AIM® service) for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • ICQ® for BlackBerry® smartphones
  • Google Talk for BlackBerry smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Client for use with Microsoft® Office Live Communications Server
  • BlackBerry® Client for IBM® Lotus® Sametime®
  • BlackBerry® Client for Novell® GroupWise® Messenger
  • BlackBerry® Messenger
This IT policy also does not apply to the following applications:
  • BlackBerry® Maps
  • Some public photo-sharing clients such as, Flickr™ Uploader for BlackBerry® smartphones and Picasa Web Albums for BlackBerry smartphones
  • Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones
  • BlackBerry® Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) Runtime Applications
  • Device Diagnostic application
For all the above-listed applications, use the application-specific policy.
