KB12417 - The calendar does not synchronize wirelessly from the BlackBerry smartphone to Microsoft Outlook


Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 3.6 to 4.1 for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry smartphone



Overview

The BlackBerry smartphone cannot synchronize data to the Microsoft® Outlook® calendar.



Cause

This issue may be caused by one of the following:
  1. Permissions for the service account have not been added correctly.
  2. The versions of MAPI.dll and CDO.dll are incorrect.



Resolution

Cause 1
Permissions for the service account have not been added correctly.
Resolution 1
  1. The Send As permission at the Microsoft Exchange Server level must be inherited down to the Storage Group level and to each Storage group. For additional information on assigning permissions to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration account, refer to KB02276.
  2. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration account can be denied if it is a member of any of the following groups:
    1. Domain Administrators - This has an inherited Deny in all Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 organizations.
    2. Enterprise Administrators - This has an inherited Deny in all Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 organizations.
    3. Exchange Full Administrative Group - This has an inherited Deny in all Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 organizations.
Make sure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration account is a member of Domain Users only and Built In\Administrators (for Domain Controllers). For more information on recommended Microsoft® Active Directory® groups, refer to KB04557.

Cause 2
The versions of MAPI.dll and CDO.dll are incorrect.
Resolution 2
Note: If you are running Microsoft Exchange 2000 System Manager or Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Administrative Tools, the CDO.dll file will not be provided. For information on how to obtain the CDO.dll file, refer to KB02937.
The CDO.dll file and other binary file versions may be incorrect. In order to compare all appropriate file versions, perform the following steps:
  1. Perform a file search on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for the following files:
    1. MAPI32.dll
    2. CDO.dll
    3. EMSMDB32.dll
  2. For each file, record the location and version.
  3. Repeat this search on all of the Microsoft Exchange Servers.
  4. The file versions on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server must be equal to or greater than the versions on the Microsoft Exchange Servers. If the versions are not equal to or greater than the versions on the Microsoft Exchange Servers, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions need to be upgraded.
  5. If the file versions match correctly, verify the correct CDO.dll file is used. See KB04912 for further information.
Note: To run Microsoft Exchange 2003 System Manager, you must be running BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.6 SP7 or BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 SP4 or later. For further information, refer to KB04586.
