Default BlackBerry Mail Flow

Hello all,

Thought I would post this as it is good info to know when troubleshooting email issues. Every BES Administrator should know how mail flows, it's essential knowledge when working with BES. Here is how mail flows between BB and Exchange:

1. Email arrives in Exchange

2. Exchange sends a UDP packet to the BES, this is because the BES has MAPI
installed
NOTE: UDP packets do not get back any ACK's, so it will never know if it is received

3. BES receives the packet and uses MAPI and permissions to access the mailbox

4. Global filters and then user filters are checked to ensure that the email is meant for the BB

5. If so, pending increases on the BES for the user

6. The email encrypted and compressed and sent out to through the firewall
on port 3101 to the BlackBerry NOC
NOTE: The encryption stores the users PIN for routing purposes

7. The Pending count is decreased, the Sent count is increased

8. The sent item is placed in the users Sent Item folder providing they have that
enabled

9. The NOC reads the info and routes the email to the wireless carrier where the
PIN was last registered

10. The carrier receives the email and forwards it to the BB

11. Email arrives on the device and decompressed and decrypted

It's the same process in reverse order except when the BB sends the email the SRP of the BES is in the encrypted info so the NOC can route it properly.

Even though this is for Exchange the process is pretty much the same for Domino and GroupWise.

Again, feel free to ask any Q's or add or point out any errors I may have made.
