KB10087 - During installation of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server the following error is received "Database server not found. Verify the provided information"

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange

Overview

When installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the following error is displayed:
Database server not found. Verify the provided information.

Cause

This issue can be caused by one of the following:
  1. The default Microsoft® SQL Server® Desktop Engine (MSDE) service is not running.
  2. None of the installed MSDE instances have the default name.
  3. MSDE or the Microsoft SQL (MSSQL) Server is not enabled for network communication.

Resolution

Perform the appropriate resolution for the cause.
Cause 1
The default MSDE service is not running.
Resolution 1
In the Windows® Services list, start the the MSSQL service.
If the MSSQL service is started, verify that an instance name appears beside the MSSQL service. If an instance name is listed, enter it into the SQL server section in the following format Server name \instance name and press the Next button.

Cause 2
None of the installed MSDE instances have the default name.
If this is the case, you will see one or more MSSQL$<instance_name> instance in the Windows Services list, but no MSSQL service.
Resolution 2
To install MSDE as a default instance, complete the following steps:
  1. Download MSDE 2000 Release A from www.microsoft.com.
  2. Run the setup application.
  3. Open a command line and browse to the folder extracted in step 2.
  4. Run the following command: setup.exe SAPWD="AStrongPassword"
  5. In the Microsoft Windows Services list, verify that MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT are running and set to start automatically.

Cause 3
MSDE or the MSSQL Server is not enabled for network communication.
Resolution 3
Perform the following steps to enable the protocols on the computer hosting the BlackBerry Configuration Database:
  1. If you are using MSDE or Microsoft SQL Server 2000, complete the following steps:
    1. Go to Start > Run > Type in CMD > Select OK to open a command prompt window.
    2. Type svrnetcn.exe and press enter. The Microsoft SQL Server Network Utility screen opens.
    3. Select Named Pipes and click Enable.
    4. Select TCP/IP
    5. Click Enable.
    6. Click Apply > OK. The Microsoft SQL Server Network Utility screen closes.
    7. If you enabled a protocol in step c, restart the Microsoft SQL Services.
  2. If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express or Microsoft SQL Server 2005, complete the following steps:
    1. Go to Start > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Configuration Manager > SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration.
    2. Select the Microsoft SQL server instance that houses the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
    3. Right click on Named Pipes and select Enable.
    4. Right click on TCP/IP and select Enable.
    5. If you enabled a protocol in step c, restart the Microsoft SQL Services.
