Will RIM produce 4.1.7?
Hey guys,
Do you guys think that RIM will make a 4.1.7 or is it straight to BES 5.0?

Even when RIM released 4.0, they still released service packs for BES 3.6. The same went for 4.0 following the release of 4.1. I think it's a safe bet to say that RIM won't discontinue support for 4.1 when they release 5.0 and I believe they will have an SP7 in the cards at some point (although over 6 months since SP6 is a long, long time for SP releases).

Yeah Otto that was my thinking, although I haven't been around the life cycles long, that seemed like a really long time looking back traditionally.

A version of BES stays supported for about a year after a new release is available, and like Otto said, you may well see a service pack for 4.1 after 5.0 launches.
It's important here to define what 'supported' is. When RIM replace a version of BES and provide an End Of Life date, all that means is after that date there will be no further software development for that release. Technical support for that EOL version will continue, but any serious or non-obvious technical issues will be met with a "upgrade to the latest version of BES" response.

No 4.1.7 but another MR for 4.1.6 before BES 5.0 is going to be available.
Remember: 5.0 will NOT be a free update.

Semantics... but for those with an active T-Support agreement, it will be.

I wonder what the cost is going to be for 5.0 upgrade.

I haven't heard any figures, but keeping with the theme of my responses on this thread, in the past, it's been a $999 one-time upgrade fee. I would imagine this holds true once again. But as Mr. Food Baby said, a TSupport contract will zero out that cost (at my previous company, the cost of TSupport was cheaper than the upgrades... although that was prior to the last restructuring of TSupport).

Free upgrades on T-Support, but T-Support itself isn't cheap!!!

Specific partners also receive zero cost upgrades especially if it benefits RIM

This is still the case for us, as we are a pretty small shop.
T-2 support works out to be less expensive than the cost of a one-time upgrade.

Wow, that's a disappointing release. I was fully expecting the alternate user ID field in the database to allow Transport to work with 4.1.x, but oh well.
