Default BES 4.1.6 upgrade and Exchange migration

Hello All

im seeking some advice on a project that has abruptly landed on me

I have inherited a network to administer and one of the immediate challenges is a joint exchange migration from 2003 to 2007 and an upgrade of the BES.

there are currently two servers running exchange 2003.

ServerA (server 2003 and exchange 2003 sp2) is the current mailbox server and has 74gig of mail hence the requirment to move to 2007

ServerB (server 2000 and exchange 2003 sp2) is the old mailbox server and has BES 4.1.6 bundle 30 installed on it. The BES has 50 users, while this isnt a massive amount of people, they are all senior department managers and are based worldwide, there is no chance of the handhelds ever visiting head office.

I shall be introducing a new mail server running Exchange 2007 SP3 on Server 2008R2. According to the compatibility matrix from RIM, i need to upgrade BES to 4.1.7 to be supported with this exchange environment.

My plan is as follows.

1. Upgrade BES from 4.1.6 to 4.1.7
2. install exchange 2007 server and migrate mail
3. configure exchange 2007 permissions for BES

so far so good, but i need to remove the exchange 2003 servers. On ServerB, if i perform an uninstall of exchange 2003, should i then be able to install the Exchange MAPI CDO components and then reconfigure BES 4.1.7 to look at the new mail server?

Any help or advice from people who have sone similar would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Podger

Hey Podger,

Just for clairification, when you case "Exchange 2003 SP2" do you mean ESM or full exhange? I only ask becuase the admin guides point out BES is not supported while being installed on the Exhange server itself (maybe why you received this project so abruptly?)

Either way you'd likely want to do the following:

1a. If BES is installed on the same server as Exchange itself, do a knife-edge cut-over to a new server (this gives you the ability to install cdo 1.2.1 since it's a pre-req anyway)
1b. If ESM is installed on BES server, uninstall ESM and install CDO 1.2.1
2. Install Exchange 2007
3. Setup BESAdmin permissions on Exchange 07 server
4. Migrate users from 03 to 07
5. Migrate BESAdmin account over last and edit mapi to point to the Exchange 07 server

Hope This helps!

Thanks for the reply.

The upgrade to 4.1.7 went smoothly, but now i am prepping for the exchange migration

to clarify, yes the server running BES does have a full installation of exchange 2003 installed, not just the ESM.

however, there is only a mailbox store on this server, and within this store are only local system accounts/mailboxes, all other user mailboxes are on the other exchange server including the BESAdmin mailbox and all the BES users mailboxes.

will i be able to get away with removing all of exchange 2003 from this server and installing CDO 1.2.1 as the only thing exchange 2003 is being used for on this server is to give the BES access to the exchange organisation

Thanks very much for the help so far

You could completely uninstall all of Exchange from that server and install cdo 1.2.1 if that exchange server isn't being used. I would suggest taking a full backup of the server first just in case because my experience is a bit more limited when uninstalling full exchange from a BES server however I cannot foresee too many issues. Remember after the uninstall of Exchange to search for cdo.dll;mapi32.dll and rename them if they are in any working directories. Then reboot and install cdo 1.2.1 afterward ensuring you "re-create the mapi profiles" after cdo 1.2.1 has been installed. and you should be fine. If you run into any issues, just post up here any we'll get ya fixed up I'm sure

Thanks for all the help.

My Client is dragging their heels on this one, and a new option has been opened up to me.

is the following a feasable plan?

1. install a new exchange 2007 server into the existing organisation.
2. migrate all non BES users mailboxes to the new server.
3. Create a new besadmin user (besadmin2) on the new exchange server
4. install a new BES express server and configure it to connect to the new exchange server.
5. over time migrate the existing BES users by wiping their handhelds, removing their account from the old bes server, migrating their mailbox to the new exchange server, creating an account on the new bes and reactivating the handheld.

will there be an issue with 2 bes servers on the same exchange organisation, even though the old bes 4.1.7 is communicating only with accounts on a 2003 server, and the new bes express 5 is communicating only with accounts on the exchange 2007 server?

once again, thanks for any help you guys can provide.

no issue doing that. But why do that? Look at transporter to move users over so they dont have to wipe their device.

I would just like to say thanks very much for all the help and support.

its the Monday after the migration and all is working well on the BES front. in the end my plan went as follows

1. install exchange, install bes express on separate vm with new besadmin account
2. migrate the mailboxes from exchange 2003 to exchange 2007
3. use the transporter tool to move users from bes 4.1.7 to bes express 5.0.2.

all the bes handhelds came across with zero service interruption, and out of 50 in total, only 2 have had issues with duplicate contacts and calendar issues which i have rectified.

now i can finally kill the windows 2000 server running the old bes services. Cheers for all the advice, the pair of you removed a major headache for me.

Thanks

Podger
