Should I have exclusive access to the BES database before upgrading the database schema for the SP upgrade ?

The reason for this question is, I am preparing to upgrade a clients BES from 5.01 to 5.02 and the client is arguing, that as we have HA, there should be no outage. Their environment has 2 HA BES pairs, 3000+ users and seperate BAS.

My plan is to stop all 4 BES + BAS, manually upgrade the database, restart 2 primary BES to minimise outage to the poor users(even at 2 am on a sunday), upgrade the BAS and then upgrade the 2 standy BES then fail over and continue.

Any thoughts and opinions appreciated, more so if they are about my question

Hey DGW,

I'm with you on this that stopping all BES servers would be the best course of action, though it's not necessary. You could just update your secondary server, fail over to it once done, then upgrade your primary and fail back over. So answer to your question is no, exclusive access is not required however if you have a BAS console from a 5.0.1 server trying to connect to a DB that was newly upgraded, it likely will not work so I suggest you stop all BAS nodes then just bring up the BAS services on whichever BES server you upgrade first and continue to use that BAS through-out the rest of the upgrade.
