Default BES Migration from Lotus to Exchange

I am fairly new in handling BES server, but was given this task

So we are actually using Lotus Notes 8 and plan to migrate all our users to Exchange 2007.

So we have a BES 4.1 running for Lotus and already installed a BES 5.0 for exchange on a different server.

When BES 5.0 was installed evaluation SRP and CAL were used. So only 20 Licences was included with the eval version.

I was planning on moving all my users from Lotus BES 4.1 to Exchange BES 5.0.

At one point I will be using all the 20 evaluation licence. I was planning at that point to stop the services on the Old Lotus BES in order to transfer the SRP identifier and authentification key to the Exchange BES 5.0 and transfer CAL as well

Will I be able to transfer the SRP keys from old BES to new BES since we did not get a migration kit for the BES

Please let me know

Hi Ostiedneer,

No need to stop BES services for license transfer. Open BlackBerry manager>>> Select Blackberry Domain (at the top of left corner) >>> Expand Account (in right workpane) >>> Click on License management >>> make note of the CAL you want to transfer and clear it.

Login to BAS >>> On the Servers and components menu, expand BlackBerry Solution topology >>> BlackBerry Domain >>> Component view.

1. Click on BlackBerry Administration Service.
2. Click on Edit component.
3. In the License key section,

• To add a BlackBerry CAL key, type the information for the BlackBerry CAL key (Noted from BES 4.1) >>> Click the Add icon.

4. Click Save all.

And Move users.

Cheers!!

and what about the SRP identifier and authentification key ? as My BES 5.0 is actually running on evaluation SRP, I will need to make my BES 5.0 from evaluation to production.

So that is why I was wondering if I can transfer the SRP from my Lotus BES 4.1 to my Exchange BES 5.0 ?

If I dont stop services on my BES 4.1 wont that cause a block of both my BES if I have them both running with the same SRP information ?

Yes, you have to shut down the old server to use the SRP in the new server. Before you do that though, I would wipe all the devices OTA via the Domino BES, as they will have to be wiped anyway before activating on the Exchange BES.

BTW the migration kit is free of charge for all TSupport customers I believe... if you have support.

Edit:
One other note. I am almost 100% positive you can't mix eval CAL's with production SRP's or vice versa. So don't expect to be able to apply the permanent CAL's with the temp SRP....

Small correction..

You can have both at a time as evaluation cals can serve till 90 days.

Indeed it is not possible to add a production CAL when an evaluation CAL is being used.

I spoke with my Rogers TSupport, and he said when I installed the BES 5.0. We should have put in our production CAL instead of the eval one.

To be able to add additional CAL I had to edit the evaluation CAL in BES 5.0 to put in my prodution CAL. Only then I was able to add more CAL

As per my Rogers TSupport, RIM does not monitor CAL, only SRP...

I find that weird, but I guess I have to take their word for it

Blackberry info on migration "kits" was pitiful last I looked. I don't blame you for being confused.

Let's suppose your Lotus server has SRP S12345678. This has an unlimited expiry. Now RIM issues you a Migration kit (SRP and Authentication) which in my case involved printing a form, handwriting it and scanning/emailing it (????) and receiving the SRP by email some time later. I think RIM claim it can take up to 5 business days (seriously!) to process this. It's a really unimpressive part of the whole process.

Anywhere, the SRP for your Exchange server is SRP S87654321. Once installed THIS BECOMES YOUR PERMANENT SRP. Your Lotus SRP is now similar to an eval key - there's a clock on it, of 90 days. With your new SRP installed you can transfer your permanent keys and remove the eval keys. You don't have to touch the Lotus server, just starting moving people over.

The Transporter Suite does not permit transfers from Domino BES to Exchange BES. This is a massive @ss pain as users then lose all their presets, Bluetooth settings etc. We used it as an opportunity to bring all of our 4.2 OS devices to 4.5 with clean installs.

TSupport did indicate that if it was not possible to shutdown the Domino BES at 90 days that something could be worked out.
