Default BES 5.0.0 to 5.0.1 with HA

All,

I'm doing a SP1 + MR1 upgrade next week and would like some feedback on my plan. Environment is:

2 x BES 5.0.0 servers in HA setup i.e. 1 active 1 standby.
1 x BAS server running on its own.

My steps are as follows:

1) Turn off the BAS server or at least stop the BAS service.
2) Log in and upgrade the standby BES node to SP1 + MR1 and reboot.
3) Upgrade the BAS server and reboot.
4) Log in to BAS and perform a manual failover and make sure it all works.
5) Upgrade the other BES server to SP1 + MR1 and reboot.

Does that plan seem sound?

Embarrassingly, I can't find any information on RIM's site about the upgrade procedure.

Thanks for any advice.

Per the 5.0 SP1 upgrade guide on page 41 you can get most of what you're looking to do explained ... however there really is no clear explanation (which is disappointing).

That said, I would upgrade BAS first, then upgrade standby, and then lastly upgrade primary.

Thanks hdawg. That's the only guide I did previously find, but discounted it because, as you say, it doesn't mention anything specific.

Even on the page you mentioned it's talking about BES 4.1 HA (i.e. an offline server ready to go).

If I upgrade BAS first, I'm assuming that will upgrade the database schema?

Correct. Regardless of which server you upgrade ... the first upgrade one will upgrade the database schema.

In general, I like upgrading schema offline (as the other servers will actively be accessing the database). If you can, I'd schedule some downtime off-hours just for the schema upgrade. If you wanted you could do the BAS upgrade at that time ... but an hour of scheduled downtime to make sure the db gets properly upgraded with all BES services offline is worth it in my case.
