Default Smartphone pre-population on BES 5.0.1

Hi all

I am busy writing my online documents for our userbase and I suddenly realised I am not certain how pre-population "populates".

I have it set to 14 days or 750 Emails, and by default all initial activations will have folder re-direction enabled. So, what happens with sub-folder pre-population?

In my case, I have 760 emails in my sent Items and 100 in my Inbox, so if the Inbox and Sent Items are given priority by pre-pop, none of my subfolders would pre-populate. Is that correct?

On my personal device I can use the remote search feature to populate my sub-folders, but for those Blackberry owvers that are not currently at firmware version 4.5, what options would there be for them (or for older Smartphone users)?

I assume for those that can upgrade to firmware revision 4.5, that is the answer.

Have I got all of this correct?

Tom

That is correct. Sub-folders, if not selected, are ignored. The options out there are a) upgrade to 4.5 (as mentioned), or b) have them set their folder redirection then have you send a remote wipe from the BES and reactivate the device (this process removes the PIN, so the current PIN is newly detected upon activation, unlike a manual wipe from the handheld leaving the device PIN on the BES). Of course, you could always query the user(s) during creation to see which folders, if any, they would want to redirect to the device and manually set those from the BES. If you're a large shop, this is unlikely to be an option, of course.

Hi Otto. But if ALL Sub-folders are selected prior to activation are they then included in the pre-population process? That is to say, if they are included in the pre-population process what is order that BES follows i.e. Inbox first, Sent items second, Sub-folders third etc.

If all 750 pre-population emails are "used up" by inbox and Sent items then sub-folders I would assume would be left out.

All of this is moot if sub-folders are "never" factored into by pre-pop (Even if selected)

Pre-population is decided by date, and limited by message count.
If all 750 messages in the inbox are newer than any message in any other folder... then they will get pre-populated first.
Of course, this is highly unlikely.

Basically, pre-population will take the newest 750 messages, regardless of what folder they are in.

As long as the redirection is enabled on that folder as was previous mentioned. Routinely for users this means Inbox and Sent only, as they will manually, or have rules set to run every few days, move things to other folder. At least this is my experience in our environment.
