Default BES - BES migration

Hello all,

I am in the process of testing the process whereby I will be moving users from completely different Forests onto my own BES environment. These users will be coming from BES setups that exist on GroupWise, Exchange and I believe Lotus Notes.

I cannot find any information that this migration is possible using any transporter tools so I am having to prepare for a manual process.

Today I am testing the Handheld backup. I have acquired a handheld which is currently connected to another BES in another Exchange Environment. I have initiated a backup of the device and came upon an expected problem. A large number of items, which wirelessly sync with the BES environment, cannot be backed up. I have found 2 options using the wondrous web. The first was for me to manually deselect the "wireless sync" option on the blackberry for Email, Calendar, Contacts, password keeper etc and then perform an "advanced" backup using BBDM. however this is time consuming and still does not cover many of the option (Phone logs, browser bookmarks etc are still not selectable).

The second option was to delete the Desktop [sync] service book, refresh the "Advanced backup " screen in BBDM, and now almost all features can be selected for backing up. but this includes things like "servicebooks" etc which I blatantly do not want.

So, in effect, i am asking what is the most successful means wherby I can backup a smartphone that is currently connected to a BES, but where I will need to restore this data to a BES in a completely different organisation?

I have performed the backup, wiped the device, about to restore the data and will then activate it. But this whole process felt clunky and I hope it will work. Any advice would be wonderful.

Tom

You should be able to backup any items, wirelessly enabled or not. You just won't be able to restore them without a wipe and/or disabling the wireless synchronization. To disable wireless synchronization on the entire device, go to Options > Advanced Options > Enterprise Activation and press ALT and type CNFG. Change Wireless Sync to No and save. This is much more efficient than the other methods above. To be honest, though... I've never come across a backup I couldn't perform while activated on a BES - it was simply the restore.

Aaah, excellent, I see. I thought when taking the backup that it did not "backup" the grayed out ones.

Just tested following:

1) Backed up my device, started a restore (without disabling sync) and it only offers to restore a select few databases
2) Disabled handheld sync, started a restore, all Databases are available for restore.

Very helpful that, thank you. Now the other big question

Which of all the available "restore" items do I NOT want to restore. Bearing in mind this "backup" is coming from a device that existed on a completely different BES environment. I would assume that the service books should not be copied over but there are many items in here and I must say I don't know the implications of restoring many of them.

I am going to probably have to provide instructions to end users and their IT support on the best method to do these things and I'd like to prevent too many of them coming back to me personally asking for assistance, I just don't have the hands available. Unless the University are willing to invest in cloning!

we all work for the same Uni by the way, it's just a weird demarcation of IT throughout it...
