Default 4.1 and 5.0 BES domain

I have a user that wants to add a test BES 5.0 to his domain. He is currently using 4.1.6 BES. He wants to be able to port a user over and test it before he does complete upgrade. Doesn't the BES 5.0 install upgrade the data base? If it does won't the 4.1.6 BES have problems working?

Would the second option be to have a completely new Database for 5.0 and just use the Transporter tool to test users?

Any insight on this would be very helpful. Thank you!

I personally made the decision to install a separate instance completely (although it can be on the same database server with no conflict, obviously) and use the Transporter tool, as mentioned. This can be staged as a pre-production environment, if he chooses. The only downside is moving users back to the BES 4.1.6 environment, in which he'd need to wipe and reactivate.

He could also upgrade the 4.1.6 database to 5.0, but he'd need to use BAS to manage the 4.1.6 server at that point, in addition to the separate 5.0 server. Obviously this gets a tad confusing and definitely changes the production server environment.

I have a number of extra SRPs, so this has never been an issue. If you have a TSupport contract, you can get a migration kit for free, I believe (you'll receive a temporary key that will become the active key after 'x' days).

When you request the migration SRP key, you will be asked for the "old" SRP key. After you receive the new SRP key, the old one will be set to expire after 60 or 90 days.
