Default WiFi Security

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about WiFi Security.

I have a customer who regularly uses WiFi to connect to the internet when abroad to send and receive e-mails to avoid expensive roaming charges.

They are concerned that somebody with access to the WiFi network could attach to their device and access their data.

A. Is this even remotely possible? I am not aware that their are any file sharing options on the device (at least until version 5) but would like to make certain.

B. If so what can be done to prevent this? e.g. on my laptop I use a Firewall to restrict access.

c. Would it be advisable to encrypt data on the device? can you encrypt data on the SD Card?

Thank You

David

So ... you're question is related to PUBLIC Wi-Fi?

Are you talking just from the BlackBerry?

The device has a firewall enabled by default, and connecting via Wi-Fi doesn't pose a risk like connecting a PC would.

No, and yes ... but I wouldn't encrypt either. Unless you plan on losing the device, a password really is enough. That said, I wouldn't keep sensitive data on the SD card without encrypting it however.

Or from a PC or any other device connected to the same network

Great, that's what i though

How do you encrypt the SD Card and does this block access when connecting via USB?

In Options / Memory, change Encryption Mode from None to one of the other options.

What carrier is the home network? BlackBerry compresses email so drastically that you're unlikely to swell roamed data charges (unless there's a lot of web browsing and apps involved, but even then that's unlikely).

Don't get me wrong, I love using my BlackBerry on Wi-Fi for faster browsing and dealing with sending and receiving large attachments, but I'd never use it out of concern for data usage.

The benefit of Wi-Fi abroad for some US-based users is the use of T-Mobile's UMA service. International roaming fees for data and voice become a non-issue, which is quite awesome (although they did lower their rates across the board should Wi-Fi access not be accessible).

I've used this functionality several times and is the one reason I have not left TMo yet.
