Default Deploying Applications to the Handheld

For those who don't know me, I support 5300+ handhelds but don't have much BES access. Much of how our enviroment works (or doesn't) it provided to me by our BES admin. I usually don't question what he tells me but I just cant believe what I heard the other day.

Anyway, just a little background.... We are just beginning to deploy some applications (Sametime, Bloomberg, and Pyxis) to our handhelds. We have the IT policy set so no 3rd party software is allowed. Not everyone gets every application. Sametime deploys and works just fine. However, I have been told that to deploy Bloomberg or Pyxis we have to allow 3rd party applications or the push fails.

Does this sound right? I can't believe that its really supposed to work this way! It completely defeats the purpose of restricting the user from installing anything they want. This means that 700+ users can go hog wild and install anything they want. Then I get tickets because they ran out of memory and want to know why their emails/call logs are disappearing.

Our enviroment:
Domino 8
BES 4.1.6
5300+ handhelds

Thanks,
Doug

That's correct. To disallow installation of any other applications, you will need to work with Software Configurations, Application Policies and create application white lists.

If I find same time, I will write down the required steps. It is very simple and not that difficult to implement. But unfortunately I am too busy at the moment

There is a good whitelisting doc on the Blackberry support site. Basically, though you create a Software Configuration and at the top level you set a software policy to DISALLOW, then add your applications and set them to either OPTIONAL or REQUIRED. Once you have that you can set the IT POLICY to allow third party downloads and assign the software configuration to the users. Only what you have set to OPTIONAL or REQUIRED will be allowed to be installed on the device. I've used this and it also removes any application not listed in the Software configuration.

Do you have a link to the white paper? I am not having any luck searching for it.

Thanks,
Doug
