Default Encryption of external memory device

Hi folks

thought I had my head around this but seems not.

Currently trying to ensure that the sd cards on users devices are encrypted in such a way that should the device go missing and said card is removed. The contents will be unreadable via 3rd party.

I have set a policy from the BES "External File System Encryption Leval IT Policy rule" to level 2.

Now my understanding is that users can still drag and drop via the USB connector onto the device which will not encrypt the contents, but if users go via the Desktop Manager, the encryption will apply.

However - Just installed Desktop manager and the Media Option is greyed out.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me please. As think I might be missing something.

Cheers

If you connect a different device with encryption not enabled can you access the media option?

Nope

One thing I have just thought, the install was run on Windows Vista. Not sure if that should make a difference, will try tomorrow on a Windows Box. Do I take it that it should work with the configuration I have in terms of the policy settings. WIth regards protecting the SD media?

What version of Desktop Manager are you using? I've never used Desktop Manager to transfer files to / from a handheld ... so I can't effectively speak to that.

Desktop Manager simply applies the encryption to the SD card. If you apply the policy and the user never connects to DM, then the policy remains pretty much useless. The implementation is similar to that of S/MIME certificate synchronization. I am not aware of it disabling the media options in DM, though. If you take the SD card from the device and stick it in a media reader, then that is a scenario where you'll see the encryption policy being applicable.
