Angry I.T. & Support

I've been working in I.T. / Support for about 15 years; and now I'm beginning to think that's just way too long...alas, I love it

From time to time, when we get asked certain questions, going against company protocol, we have to say no.

But, my question is, why can't employee's just do what they get paid to do, rather than trying to get around the system? For example, we have a strict Proxy in place here, i.e. no browsing to FaceBook, MySpace and the likes at work, unless it's after hours (proxy is set that way). But, these bloody younsters just don't get it...

Let's not talk about trying to download things onto their pc's!

Honestly!

Tell them to use Facebook on their BB's

Yea, I know what you mean. It's refreshing (unfortunately) to find someone who can 'go with the flow'.

My company is in the same boat. All of the "new kids" give the old college try to bypass our proxies, I find it amusing...

The best part is when they try to use their blackberries... our proxies manage all web browsing on the devices too! After 5pm our proxy policy becomes more lenient.

I had a brand new employee call me because IE wasn't working. When I got there he told me he had to call because he tried to reload it and was not authorized. I just stood there, shaking my head, thinking 'Are you really telling the guy in charge of I.T. that you tried to install software on your desktop?' That is a great way to start a relationship with I.T., essentially declare "I'm a hacker"

I REALLY love it when they tell me they are a hacker or did security work at another company. Then watch them try to get around my security. I've yet to have anyone bypass anything I put in place, including people that have been on my own team at other companies.

Most times, once I'm tired of watching them and when they are no longer amusing me, I setup rules to forward EVERYTHING they do to their boss and wait for the call to disable their account within 10 minutes. Yes I am the Original BOFH and damn proud of it.

The reality is this - it's 2009, and wherever you are in the world you're affected by the economic situation. Thus, everyone needs to be giving it 110% at work and not asking about stupid stuff like access to social networking sites on company time. It amazes me people even have the nerve to ask. As far as I'm concerned, if you have time to access these sites at work then you either need to be given additional work or we need to be evaluating your position within the business.
