So it's a holiday night. This means I get to stay up late... and make really dumb purchases

I bought a new computer, my first Intel-based machine since my purchase of a Pentium II 450MHz system back in 1998. I also bested my previously high of $1,700 on a system with a whopping $2,100 on this one. With that said, I ordered enough 'new' stuff to qualify for nearly $200 in mail-in rebates (let's hope I remember to do them this time), so it's not that bad when all is said and done.

So here's what I got:

Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz Quad-Core processor
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 LGA 1366 motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896MB video card
OCZ Flex EX 4GB memory
Western Digital RE3 1TB hard drive
Western Digital VelociRaptor 10K RPM 300GB hard drive
Cooler Master COSMOS RC-1000 case
Corsair 620W modular power supply
Samsung 24" widescreen LCD

This will allow me to free up my current system for some other projects, such as a media server or VMware ESX host server.

I always hate feeling nervous about spending that much money, but on the other hand, I have a rather HUGE tax return coming in this year and no bills to my name (aside from my mortgage) and my car will be paid off in 2 months. WOOOT!

Nice! I just picked up a Dell XPS420 with the same Core i7 2.66GHz processor. 8GB RAM; 640GB SATA. I went to Circuit City (vulture)and picked up 500GB SATA drive for $82.

Running 64-bit Vista.

I thought about moving to the 64-bit route, but I have a license for 32-bit Vista already. And with the improvements in Windows 7, I decided that 4GB would be enough memory for me until it came out.

You must get paid WAYYYY too much there

I've been sitting here running the Windows Experience Index and kept coming up with a 5.8 and 5.9 scores. Really kind of ticked me off, as I figured it was on a scale of 1.0 to 10.0. Looks like 5.9 is the highest. LOL!

Wahhhhh - mine is only a 5.2
Gaming Graphics was the only 5.2 on mine. Good thing I don't do gaming!

4.9 on my macbook pro. no gaming but good gaming graphics.
