If we get Cam Newton (brings back memories, eh?), we should move on up to 5th or higher. I believe we'll close strong this season, as well.

If you get him, hope he works out better than our Cam Newton. UF should finish strong. We're still on the list for most of the unsigned in the top 10 recruits.

It says he's focusing on his health. Keep in mind that he was hospitalized following the SEC Championship Game. I'd be curious if this was something serious, such as heart issues or cancer or something along those lines... of course, the Dallas Cowboys should be looking for a new coach shortly...

Quote:
"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.

"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family.

"I'm proud to be a part of the Gainesville community and the Gator Nation and I plan to remain in Gainesville and involved with the University of Florida.

"I'm very appreciative for the opportunity I've had to be a part of a tremendous institution - from Dr. Machen to Jeremy Foley and the entire administrative staff at UF. I'm also very thankful for the chance to work with some of the best assistants in college football and coach some of the best college football players and watch them grow both on and off the field as people. I will cherish the relationships with them the most."

If he is leaving for health reasons, he certainly won't decrease his stress level by going to Dallas. I say he is done. Maybe the next AD at UF. The SEC lost a great coach today.

Wow. Just saw it on the news. I'm stunned. It must be pretty serious for him to step down. I wish him all the best. And I agree, the SEC has lost a great coach today.

Can't disagree at all - except maybe to be a bit less parochial and say college football lost a great coach today.

All the best to Urban and his family, may they have a long and happy life together.

So - who in the heck does Florida go after to replace him?!?!?!

Speculation on the Husker forum I frequent - Florida will go after Bob Stoops and he'll accept. What say the Florida fans here about that??

It seems the more likely choices are Dan Mullen or Charlie Strong. Imagine if Strong would have stayed another month at Florida... wow, that's what I call a missed opportunity (assuming he would have inherited the job - if not, wow at the shit-storm in response). I'm going to go with the popular vote and say that Dan Mullen will be the next coach at Florida.

With that said, it's certainly going to be interesting to see what happens to Florida's top-rated recruiting class.

I think they'll go after Bob Stoops again. And how about Mike Shanahan?

They were poised to have the top rated class. Easily. They need to get this position filled ASAP to try and preserve that.

Well, interestingly this morning, its being reported that Louisville hasn't yet signed Strong to a contract, he's only signed a "term sheet" which might leave him open to change his mind. Could get interesting.

Good article on the NYT:

The New York Times > Log In

I have a feeling that, talent and recruiting aside, next year does not look to be pretty for the Gators. Looking at the personnel moving on, having to go on the road against Tennessee, Alabama and Florida State while playing host to LSU does not look like a return to the SEC title game is in the books (with Meyer or not).

P.S. - The only SEC team Meyer never beat was Auburn. We accounted for 20% of his total losses and 25% of his SEC losses (and 50% of his home losses). WOOT!

The latest news is that he is taking a leave of absence. And that the OC will be in coach while he is out. So hopefully he will get another crack at AU!

You might be right about next year. Particularly if we lose as many juniors as some think we might. If he is indeed only taking a year off, that may preserve some of/most of the class he has currently committed.

Ok, so to break it down into actual games, that would be that AU accounted for 2 of his total losses, 2 of his SEC losses and ONE of his home losses.

Yep - latest word, and a definite about-face from what he said yesterday. Reports seem to be that his team "talked him out of" resigning. If that's the case, that may not really be the best thing for Meyer, his health and his family - but emblematic of his obsession (not meant negatively) with the game. It sounded like he had thoroughly discussed it earlier with family, doctors and U of FL management and made a well-thought-out decision. Hope the about-face doesn't turn out to be a mistake and negatively impact his health.

He is obviously a very conflicted individual right now. He is really good at what he does, but it is an apparent obsession as you suggest. There's nothing wrong with that, he just has to find a way to balance his job with a personal life. I think it's more than physical. I think he needs to see a good psychologist.

Dawg, your Dawgs looked pretty good yesterday. I was surprised at the announcers comments on how young the team is. They will have a slew of seniors next year I guess. Could be a strong team for Richt next year. And with some new coaches, who knows.

Yep, I agree with you 100% He's very conflicted, and it would seem that he's going to need some help with balancing the job with a personal life, it would seem. This from his wife in one of the recent articles:
Quote:
How will he handle being away from football?

“We’re going to find out,” said his wife, Shelley. “We’ve just got to see how he handles his leisure time. I’ve never seen him handle leisure time. That’s like an oxymoron.”

Looks like it's started. Elam switched from a solid UF commit to ^%&$#% FSU last night. He was our only 5 star recruit.

Man, I tell you... Atlanta to Tampa is one LONG drive. But our game turned out to be one hell of a barn-burner... I don't remember the last time I saw a team put up over 500 yards passing against us, but we had one heck of a knack of taking the ball away at the right time (as well as giving it up at the wrong time). Coach Chizik said after the game that he never knew anyone who went into a game with 7 wins and came out with 10 wins (referencing the number of times we 'won' the game at the end)... LOL!

Florida sounded good (we listened on ESPN Radio on the way home) last night, but it seemed like every name they called was someone who would possibly be leaving for the NFL, whether it was someone scoring or someone getting injured. From looking on the AU forum this morning, it seems like Cincy played a very, VERY dirty game.

Auburn did everything they could to let Northwestern win. But a pretty sloppy game for both teams. I think it would have gone into another OT period if not for the Northwestern kicker getting hurt.

That just seems to be the case anymore with any college football team. On the play that Demps hurt his arm, one of the defenders finished him off with a knee to his chest. Was it necessary? No, not at all. I think it's just the way they are coached these days. They probably get something 'extra' when they take out an opposing player. I'm surprised injuries haven't been worse the last couple years.

I know one game that I actually saw that I made a comment about was the Wisconsin squad. After Jacory Harris was hurt, they went after his knee almost any chance they got.

I dont know if its the way they are coached or its just that they are told to play to the whistle. But what i am talking about is the pushing and shoving and slaps to the head. The shot that the florida guy took while the pile up was being broken up was totally uncalled for. But Cinncy took shot as well after the whistle

It's just unnecessary. And it's not just Florida of course. The kids seem so jacked up these days. There's no reason for it. I mean act like you've actually played the game for a while. Bobby Bowden once said 'we play to the echo of the whistle'. Meaning, they are encouraged to try to get a late hit in. The pushing and shoving after the whistle is just nonsense but unfortunately, common these days.
