DF, if your Huskers pull off this upset, the BCS will be a huge mess.

That was murder! Ingram may have run himself back into the Heisman race, as well... especially with the game that McCoy is playing thus far. Also, I believe there's PLENTY of room for a one-loss Florida team to have a rematch against Bama if Texas loses... and then the BCS would implode on itself

That has to be about the most heartbreaking game I've ever watched my Huskers play. But since no one gave us a chance at all, I'm not hanging my head. Frankly, I think Suh did more to position himself as a Heisman contender tonight than McCoy did.
Looking at what Bo Pelini has done with our offense - from 115th two years ago to 3rd in the nation this year - if we can put together even an average offense next year, we could be scary. I think off both sides of the ball, we graduate only 5-6 starters.
I'd sure have liked to see my Huskers pull the upset, and throw the BCS into complete turmoil. jibi, I don't think that would have given Florida any chance for a rematch, since their game today wasn't even close. We'd have seen either TCU or Cincy playing Alabama for the NC.

I think if Nebraska had any offense at all, they would have killed Texas. Nebraska's D was awesome.

Have to agree, Sparky. Our D is awesome, and our O sucks - been that way this season. And we'd have pulled this out if one of two last minute things hadn't happened. The attempted pooch kick going out of bounds, and the horsecollar penalty. Take away either of those, and they're not in field goal range at the end.

I'm sitting here this morning trying to decide whether last night's game means 'Bama will destroy Texas in the NC game, or whether our D is good enough to throttle 'Bama too, the way we did Texas. Not really sure of the answer, guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

From what I saw last night, Nebraska desperately needs to focus on offense. i saw no performance the RB position. i am not sure if that is an issue with the O-line or just a bad running back. That is the biggest difference in our teams. As far as Texas goes, we will just have to see what happens. if we prepare for that game the way we did for UF, we should prevail. However, I have seen Alabama lay eggs before, so I am cautiously optimistic that we have learned from our mistakes. It has been a great season for all of our teams on this forum, even Notre Dame, (CW is gone). 1 more to go and then on to recruiting season and start all over.

No doubt. From watching them all season, I think our two primary RB's are good - and one's a Jr and the other a true Fr, so we have them back this year. The problem has been a combination of O-line problems, coupled with not having a good enough QB to establish a true vertical threat and keep the opposing D honest. It seems we have some up and comers on the line, but the QB position at the moment is troublesome. The backup is a true Fr, hoping he'll gain some confidence, learn more of the offense and do a whole lot better next year. We shall see. Although we lose Suh, Pelini thinks our D next year is potentially even better than this year, so if we could put together a reasonably good offense next year, we could be scary good.

With Pelini at the head of the table, your defense should continue to prosper. Now time to get some offensive personnel in there that can provide more of a threat than two runs for no positive yards while in a 1st and goal from the 9 to win the game.
Suh's performance has the college football forums around the nation on fire right now. I don't think he has a chance to win the Heisman (Thank you, Charles Woodson), but he certainly should get an invite to the Downtown Athletic Club, imo.

Also, I know that Pelini seems to think there is a conspiracy about the time. From what we saw on TV, there looked to be a legit second on the clock after the ball hit the ground (and two seconds as the ball was going out of bounds, although I'm not sure on the ruling there). Nevertheless, looking at the Bama offensive line, they have had one holding penalty called on them in 6 games. While this would seem like incredible discipline or referees allowing the teams to play the game, five of those six teams had holding penalties called on them. I'm not sure what's going on there, but that sure is an amazing statistic...

I'm not fixated on the time, as there are many other things to point to. Had we not kicked off out of bounds (pooch attempt) OR had we not had a horsecollar penalty, they'd not have been in field goal range, as McCoy had managed to get -3 yards from where the kickoff penalty and horsecollar penalty put us.
I don't think anyone thinks "conspiracy" about the time, but the issue seems to be whether or not, without reviewing some other aspect of a play, "time" or "the clock" is a reviewable thing on its own or not. I've not found anywhere in the rules that would indicate it is.

This is from this year's NCAA rule book:
Limitations on Reviewable Plays
ARTICLE 6. No other plays or officiating decisions are reviewable.
However, the replay official may correct egregious errors, including those
involving the game clock, whether or not a play is reviewable. This excludes
fouls that are not specifically reviewable (Reviewable fouls: Rules 12-3-2-c
and d, 12-3-4-b and 12-3-5-a).
That should answer your question.

Dallas, I agree with you on that call. It's about time that a dominant D player has a shot at the Heisman, and Suh was that.

Well, not exactly. That exact rule was quoted in the Husker forums and discussed also. Its possible to find literally dozens of occurrences where an extra second or two goes off the game clock after an incompletion or an out of bounds throw - with no review and no change made - its fairly common. For a great example, where like last night the game was on the line, take a look at this video of the end of this year's FSU-Miami game. At the end of the first down play, the clock is clearly at 10 seconds, but goes to 9 before its stopped - no review, no adjustment. And after the 3rd down play, its fairly clear the ball hits the turf with 1 second, but the clock ticks to zero and the game is over - no review, no adjustment.
In fact, no one has yet found another example of where it WAS reviewed and a second added back - except last night. What made the situation last night "egregious", as opposed to for example the FSU-Miami game?
Again, either not kicking O/B on the kickoff, or not making the horsecollar tackle, either would have resulted in us winning the game, so its not like the clock thing was the only thing. Had we taken care of business the clock wouldn't have mattered. But it does seem quite unusual to have that reviewed - witness that FSU-Miami game.

@milk and iam4uf, do you recommend purchasing parking early or paying when we get to Raymond James? You guys doing anything for NYE, or are you heading to New Orleans (sure wish we could get back there... I love it on New Years!)

Hey Guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while, my Mother in law passed away unexpectedly a few Weeks ago. Needless to say my Life has been upside down for the last few Weeks.
First want to say, congrats to Bama. I was at the game and they dominated in every aspect of the game. Funny, during the warm ups you could see the Bama players were bouncing everywhere, they were pumped. Then you look over at Florida sidelines and it just seemed like they were lethargic. Anyways, congrats to Bama and let's hope the SEC brings another national title.
Nebraska - Dallas, that defense is for real. If Suh does not get invited to the Heisman ceremony it will be a travesty. I have not seen a defensive tackle like him in a while. There are a lot of tackles that do a good job defending the run or the pass, but not many who can do both as good as that guy. He will be a top 3 overall pick. I would love for Tampa to pick him #1.
Jibi, I am not going to the Sugar Bowl even though I want to sooo bad. I would be divorced if I went though, so no go for me. The only reason I would get a parking pass is if you want to be next to all the Auburn fans other than that I would not. There is plenty of parking all around the stadium. We park on the east side of the stadium across from ABC new building for the USF games.
Also, another place to hang out in Tampa besides Ybor City is Channel side. It is more of a older (25-40) crowd. Ybor can get kinda rowdy late at night with young punks. But, I'm sure it will be filled with Auburn fans so you should be fine. We like channel side a lot better though.

iam4uf - condolences to both you and your wife on the passing of your mother-in-law, I'm sure that was very tough.
Thanks for the good comments on Suh and the Nebraska D - I've been watching the Heisman predictions, sounds certain he'll be in NY. If we can find an offense for next year, we should be really good - Pelini says he feels next year the D will be even better, despite losing Suh.

@iam4uf, condolences to your family. I just lost my grandmother yesterday morning. Definitely a rough patch (although it was far from unexpected).
@DF, it seems like Ingram may very well bring Bama their first Heisman, but Suh certainly will make it close. StiffArmTrophy.com projects all three to finish close (Gerhart being the runner-up). Trophy or not, Suh is going first in the draft and will be a very, very rich man (and I believe the last first pick to be able to take advantage of the obscene signing bonus money). So while Ingram can have his trophy, Suh can buy himself a few...

Interesting story developing...
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/sp...e.html?_r=1&hp
So now it seems that LSU and Tennessee are under NCAA investigation. It was recently uncovered that Auburn was penalized for minor violations during the Big Cat Weekend when we had most of the nation's top recruits on campus for a special weekend.
Meanwhile, Alabama football players are off on fishing trips, receiving laptops from random people, and selling their school-provided textbooks or providing a 'comp account' for non-athletes (proven), as well as recruits receiving special scholarship treatment for their girlfriends, receiving cars, etc. (unproven) with little to no real punishment.
It seems interesting that Alabama's top three rivals would be under NCAA scrutiny or in NCAA reports all within 2 weeks, eh?

...and on to the 2010 season. What do your schedules look like for next season? I'm really digging our season next year (especially since we have season tickets).
vs. Arkansas State
at Mississippi State
vs. Clemson
vs. South Carolina
vs. Louisiana-Monroe
at Kentucky
vs. Arkansas
vs. LSU
at Ole Miss
vs. UT-Chattanooga
vs. Georgia
BYE
at Alabama
Our even years are always our strongest. Having Clemson, South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia at home doesn't hurt our situation, either. I think we'll be a much improved team, as we'll have some added depth on the defensive side of the ball. We'll be young on the two deep (we return a ton of starters), but I don't believe it's too early to be somewhat cautiously optimistic (as always).
On offense, we're losing Chris Todd (QB), Ben Tate (RB), Tommy Trott (TE), and Andrew McCain (RT). On defense, we're losing Antonio Coleman (RE), Jake Ricks (DT), and Walt McFadden (CB).
We have Tyrik Rollison waiting in the wings at QB. He has recently been suspended due to likely academic issues, but should be back soon (hopefully the suspension was to give him dedicated time to focus on grades and finals). He was a 4-star recruit last season, ranking as the #2 dual-threat QB and in the Rivals 100 (60th), and named the most accurate passer in last year's crop of QBs.
We have Mario Fannin and Onterio McCalebb returning next season at running back. Mario combines both speed, strength and size in a package that can prove to be deadly almost anytime he touches the ball. He can be used from behind the line or in the slot. I'm looking at him taking more of a true, every down RB next season. McCalebb adds that corner man who has the ability to reach the corner and break one wide open. Coming in this class are Michael Dyer (5-star, #3 RB) and likely another elite RB (Marcus Lattimore - 5-star, #2 RB or Lache Seastrunk - 5-star, #1 RB) - all three will be ready to play on day one, most likely.
We're returning four starters on our OL. That spells a TON of trouble for any defense. We're looking at adding one of the best tackles from JUCO. We need depth at this position and we're hopefully addressing our needs with a number of top recruits from HS and JUCO (all of whom should see significant playing time immediately). Losing Trott may be a blessing in disguise for us next season. He could sometimes be Mr. Reliable and other times be Mr. Shakey Hands. Our upcoming TE recruited last season, Philip Lutzenkirchen, a 4-star recruit and #3 overall TE in the nation, proved early on that he will be a future upgrade at the position.
On the defensive side of the ball, we're in desperate need to add depth to almost all positions. While we're losing All-SEC end Antonio Coleman, we'll be returning a number of players at our fullest position on the team. Our secondary is the most concerning area on defense, but we're hoping to return Mike McNeil, Zac Etheridge, and Aairon Savage for next season. All three of these guys have the talent to be All-Conference players. At LB, we're pulling in one of our most talented classes to date, but our returning starters (Stevens, Freeman, Bynes) are as talented as nearly any other LB corps in the nation - they just need a breather now and again.
Most importantly, perhaps, no coaches are expected to be leaving. It was said that all of the assistant coaches promised to stay on for at least two years and dedicate their energy towards Auburn and our kids.
Barring any sort of hiccups with injuries or depth, Auburn will improve next year. If some of these highly praised recruits can come in and contribute early and often, based on our home-friendly schedule, we may very well be in a position to challenge Alabama for the division. We'll see what happens.

Well, as of now he's won the Nagurski and the Lombardi, still up for the Chuck Bednarik and Outland tonight and the Lott on Sunday - all of which he's the odd on favorite to win - along with the Walter Camp and the Heisman. Not to mention, as you said, consensus 1st draft pick and millions of dollars!
By the way - only one player in history to win the Nagurski, Outland, Lott and Lombardi up to this point. LSU's Glenn Dorsey - coached by Bo Pelini.

Vol coach Lane Kiffin says recruitment investigation a compliment - NCAA Football - SI.com
"I know that he (Rubio) went in there and saw some of his old teachers and saw some of his coaches. I don't know that he did (recruit) at all," Kiffin said. "I never want to say never, but I will pretty much say that he did not while I was with him. And I don't think he could have, because they were practicing during the time that he went inside, anyway."
Uh. Yeah, right.

were you there? I wasn't so he is innocent until proven otherwise. I hate all these accusations against a school just because people hate the coach

Hmm, interesting tidbit of information. Alabama is currently on NCAA probation for the textbook scandal that happened a couple years ago. Under this probation, they are ineligible to receive votes in the Coaches Poll. Oh, but wait, they're currently resting atop that poll that says: "The AFCA prohibits coaches from voting for schools on major NCAA probation."
Certainly interesting, in my opinion.

Expect others to open up with the above vacancies being filled (a la Cincinnati most likely). Does Turner Gill get one of these jobs? What about Charlie Strong? Do they even get an interview? It sounds like Strong will interview for the Louisville job tomorrow and is atop their list. Turner Gill keeps on being mentioned for the Kansas job, but it seeming more and more unlikely he will end up with the position. I wouldn't be surprised if Gill didn't get a single interview, to be honest. The simple fact of the matter is that this is going to get ugly if one or both of these guys aren't promoted to a head coaching position in this off-season.
|
Well, your call about Gill not getting a single interview was in error. Guess we don't have to worry about it getting ugly. Strong to Cincinnati, Gill to Kansas, they both got their BCS HC jobs. Good luck to both gentlemen (except when Kansas plays Nebraska, of course!)

Calm down Dawg. Nope, wasn't there. Yes, I don't like Kiffin. And reread it. All I did was post a story and comment on it. What's the big deal?

Now let's see what either of them do. I'm thinking that Charlie Strong will be successful in two years or less at Louisville. I'm thinking that it will take a couple more years for Turner Gill to be successful at Kansas. With Kansas State and Nebraska on the rise and Missouri still having some hope, I think that Kansas may have lost a lot of upperclassman talent from a team that took a huge step back this season. Playing in the Big 12 doesn't help Gill's plight, but I wish him the best... heaven knows the Big 12 North could field some competition at some point

I agree that the jury's out regarding Gill at Kansas. Actually, I think that's kind of a tough job. Kansas was a B12 doormat for a long time before Mangino's arrival, and football always has and always will take a backseat to basketball at Kansas - for attendance and financial backing. Keeping Kansas relevant will be a challenge, no doubt.

An interesting post from a guy on the Husker forum who looked up all the stats. Kinda shows why Suh is projected to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft.
2009 stats:
Alabama D-Line
98 Tkl, 23.5 TFL, 9.5 Sk, 20 QBH, 5 PBU, 0 Int, 1 FF, 3 Blk
Florida D-Line
112 Tkl, 33 TFL, 14 Sk, 48 QBH, 5 PBU, 0 Int, 1 FF, 0 Blk
Texas D-Line
116 Tkl, 25.5 TFL, 15.5 Sk, 10 QBH, 7 PBU, 0 Int, 2 FF, 0 Blk
Ndamukong Suh
82 Tkl, 23 TFL, 12 Sk, 24 QBH, 10 PBU, 1 Int, 1 FF, 3 Blk
That Suh has been a pretty good DL, huh?

Maybe the Pelini brothers can coach up another one in less than a generation?
Ndamukong Suh
82 Tkl, 23 TFL, 12 Sk, 24 QBH, 10 PBU, 1 Int, 1 FF, 3 Blk
As Suh was putting up those numbers this year, here's his fellow starter at DT this year, a sophomore:
Jared Crick
70 Tkl, 12.5 TFL, 9.5 Sk, 14 QBH, 4 PBU, 0 Int, 0 FF, 1 Blk

That rule only applies when Auburn is on probation. Read the fine print.

Although the NCAA has deemed Alabama a repeat offender (for the umpteenth year straight) committing egregious acts that smells of loss of institutional oversight and control and considers the violations 'major', due to Alabama not having a bowl ban, a television ban, or a 20% reduction in scholarships, the AFCA does not considering it 'major probation'.
