KB15345 - How to qualify low memory situations on the BlackBerry smartphone
KB15345 - How to qualify low memory situations on the BlackBerry smartphone
Environment
Overview
Important: Before completing the following instructions, verify that the most recent version of BlackBerry® Device Software is installed on the BlackBerry smartphone and on the computer. Verify that it is installed on the computer by opening BlackBerry® Desktop Manager and clicking Help > About BlackBerry Desktop Manager > Device Software.
Important: Do not remove the battery from the BlackBerry smartphone.
Please make note of the values outlined in the following steps:
- On the Home screen of the BlackBerry smartphone, click Options.
- Click Status and note the values listed for File Free and File Total.
- Divide each of these two values by 1024, so that they are measured in kilobytes (KB).
- Record the new values, and name them as Displayed File Free and Displayed File Total. For example, a File Free value of 15537404 bytes (B), divided by 1024, results in a Displayed File Free value of 15173 KB

- Display the menu, and click Database Sizes.
- Record the value shown in the Total Size field at the top of the screen.

- Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager, then open the application loader tool.
- Click Next on the Welcome screen.
- Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and allow the application loader tool to detect it. You might be prompted to type a password.
- Click Next on the Device Application Selection screen.
- Verify that the List additional applications that are installed on the connected device check box is selected.
- Record the value for the Total application space, located at the bottom of the window. Note: BlackBerry Device Software must be installed on the computer to display the correct total application space.

- Calculate the Reserved Pictures Memory for BlackBerry smartphones that have integrated cameras. If a camera is not integrated, proceed to step 12.
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, open the Media application.
- Display the menu, and click Options.
- Note the Reserved Pictures Memory value and multiply that value by 1024.

- Record the value. For example, 2 MB * 1024 = 2048.
- To calculate the Total Amount of Memory In Usage, add the values for Total Application Space, Total Size, and Reserved Pictures Memory (if applicable). For example, for a BlackBerry smartphone with an integrated camera: 43869 + 504.3 + 2048 = 46421.3 KB
For example, for a BlackBerry smartphone without an integrated camera: 43869 + 504.3 = 44373.3 KB
- To get the Calculated File Free value, subtract the value for Total Amount of Memory In Usage from the Total Flash Memory supported by the BlackBerry smartphone.
Note: Use the value of 62500 KB for the Total Flash Memory for the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8100 Series, BlackBerry® 8800 Series, BlackBerry® 8700 Series, and the BlackBerry® 8300 Series, except for the BlackBerry® Curve™ 8330 smartphone. For the BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphone, use the Total Flash Memory value of 94500 KB.
For example, for a BlackBerry smartphone with an integrated camera: 62500 - 46421.3 = 16078.7 KB
For example, for a BlackBerry smartphone without an integrated camera: 62500 - 44373.3 = 18126.7 KB
- If the Calculated File Free value is less than 5120 KB, see KB14320 for tips on maximizing memory for BlackBerry smartphones.
- If the Calculated File Free value is greater than 5120 KB, but the Displayed File free value is 0 bytes, contact your wireless service provider.
