KB16309 - Digital rights management and the BlackBerry Storm smartphone
Environment
* BlackBerry® Storm™ 9500 smartphone
* BlackBerry® Storm™ 9530 smartphone
Details
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technology used by content and copyright owners to control access to digital media or hardware or restrict the use of media files for specific devices or circumstances.
The BlackBerry Storm smartphone can play DRM protected music when the music is downloaded or purchased from a wireless service provider. Blackberry smartphone users can download music in one of the following ways:
* Over the wireless network onto the BlackBerry smartphone
* Using a desktop computer (In this case, music is transferred to the BlackBerry smartphone through the wireless service provider's music store application.)
Media files that are protected using DRM technologies are transferred from a computer to a BlackBerry smartphone using Media Transfer Protocol (MTP). For more information on MTP, see KB16310.
Additional Information
The BlackBerry Storm smartphone cannot play DRM protected music from sources other than the wireless service provider's music stores. For example, DRM protected files downloaded using iTunes® will not work on the BlackBerry Storm smartphone.
