KB16001 - BlackBerry Controller service fails to start with error 5003 after restart
KB16001 - BlackBerry Controller service fails to start with error code 5003 after a restart of the server
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 for Microsoft® Exchange
- BlackBerry® Professional Software
- SDR204119
Overview
When Microsoft® security bulletin MS08-37 is installed on a computer that hosts both the BlackBerry Enterprise Sever and the Domain Name System (DNS), the BlackBerry Controller service may generate a 5003 error and fail to start.
Cause
Microsoft security bulletin MS08-37 causes the DNS to bind to the internal port the BlackBerry Controller uses to connect to other BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. As a result, the BlackBerry Controller generates a 5003 error and fails to start. The BlackBerry Controller log file contains the following entries:
[20000] (08/13 03:33:08.453):{0xE00} LogReceiver: Failed to bind a socket
[10000] (08/13 03:33:08.453):{0xE00} Could not start the syslog receiver subsystem, exiting...
[50091] (08/13 03:33:08.453):{0xE00} Stopping BlackBerry Agent Controller
[50093] (08/13 03:33:08.453):{0xE00} BlackBerry Agent Controller Stopped
Resolution
For instructions on reserving the ports that are required by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services, serch for "How to reserve a range of ephemeral ports" on the Microsoft Help and Support site. For this particular issue, reserve ports 4070 and 4071.
Workaround
To work around this issue, complete one of the following procedures:
Warning: The second procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
- Stop the DNS, start the BlackBerry Controller service, and then restart the DNS. Note: The issue could potentially occur again when the computer is restarted.
- Modify the value of the Syslog User Datagram Protocol (UDP) port using the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Controller\SysLogPort registry key to utilize port 4071 in base decimal format and restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services. Note: If the SysLogPort registry key is not be present, it can be created as a DWORD key before performing the workaround.
