KB11708 - Unable to use the BES Manager while logged in through Terminal Services
KB11708 - Unable to use the BES Manager while logged in through Terminal Services
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 for Microsoft® Exchange®
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 for Microsoft® Exchange®
- Microsoft® Exchange® 2003 Service Pack 1 and later
- Microsoft® Windows® Server® 2003
- Microsoft Windows® 2000 Server Service Pack 4 and later
Overview
When you attempt to log in to BlackBerry Manager using Terminal Services and an account that does not have Local Administrative rights, you will receive an error. This will typically occur for system administrators granted access to the BlackBerry Configuration Database using Role Based Administration.
You receive the following warning when trying to open the BlackBerry Manager: An error occurred while initializing a MAPI session using the profile ''. Please review the log for details.

Once the BlackBerry Manager opens, you find functionality is limited as the Mailstore Adaptor DLL failed to initialize.
The following Registry entry Windows Messaging Subsystem under the following path doesn't exist:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
When opening the Exchange System Manager you receive the following error:

When you log in to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server locally, or when you are made a member of the Local Administrators group, the BlackBerry Manager functions normally.
Cause
When Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is running on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4 (or later) or Windows Server 2003, BlackBerry Manager creates objects in the computer's global namespace. As a result, any system administrator who is using BlackBerry Manager must have the Create Global Objects right (SE_CREATE_GLOBAL_NAME) on the server. By default, local administrator accounts have this right. However, if your account has Exchange View Only Administrator rights but does not have local administrator rights on the computer, you will receive the error shown above. This situation typically occurs when you use Terminal Services to access Exchange System Manager on another server for which you do not have local administrator rights.
Resolution
To avoid this error, you must either become a member of the local administrators group, or acquire the Create Global Objects right. To grant this right, log on to the local computer using an account that is a member of the local administrator group, and then grant this right to the desired account in Local Security Settings.
Additional Information
The Create Global Objects right does not exist in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP3 (or earlier) or Microsoft Windows® XP. For these operating systems, no action is necessary.
