Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 to 4.1 for Microsoft® Exchange

Overview

After the Server Routing Protocol (SRP) Identifier and the SRP Authentication Key are typed during a BlackBerry Enterprise Server software installation, the following error message is displayed:
Unable to initialize MAPI subsystem

Cause

This issue is caused by one of the following:
  1. The computer you are installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on does not have Microsoft Exchange System Manager or Microsoft Exchange Administrator installed.
  2. The Microsoft Exchange System Manager or Microsoft Exchange Administrator is not functioning correctly.
  3. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process was started using a different BlackBerry Enterprise Server Windows account.
  4. The current version of the MAPI32.dll file on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is pointing to a version that is available with the Microsoft® Outlook® or Microsoft Office installation.

Resolution

Complete the appropriate resolution for your cause.
Cause 1
The computer you are installing the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on does not have Microsoft Exchange System Manager or Microsoft Exchange Administrator installed.
Resolution
Depending on your Microsoft Exchange Server environment, install Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Administration tools, Microsoft Exchange System Manager 2000, or Microsoft Exchange System Manager 2003.
For Microsoft Exchange 2007 environments, see KB12697.

Cause 2
The Microsoft Exchange System Manager or Microsoft Exchange Administrator is not functioning correctly.
Resolution
Uninstall and re-install the Microsoft Exchange System Manager or Microsoft Exchange Administrator on the Microsoft Exchange Server that hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Cause 3
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process was started using a different BlackBerry Enterprise Server Windows account. You are using a different BlackBerry Enterprise Server Windows account to run the configuration tool and complete the installation process.
Resolution
Warning: The following procedure involves changing the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries before making any changes.
To resolve this problem, complete the following steps:
  1. Log in to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server with the Windows account that was used to begin the installation process.
  2. Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run. Type regedit and click OK.
  3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and select the Research In Motion folder.
  4. From the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  5. Choose a location to save the file, type a file name, and click Save.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
  7. Log out of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and then log in using the Windows account information that is being used to continue the installation process.
  8. Open the Registry Editor.
  9. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and select the Research In Motion folder.
  10. From the Registry menu, click Import Registry File.
  11. Choose the location where the Research In Motion file is saved, click Open, and then click OK.
  12. Close the Registry Editor.
  13. Continue the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process.

Cause 4
The current version of the MAPI32.dll file on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is pointing to a version that is available with the Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office installation.
Perform one of the following resolutions:
Resolution 1
  1. If Microsoft Outlook is installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, uninstall it.
  2. Uninstall Microsoft Exchange System Manager on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and rename the mapi32.dll file to mapi32.bak.
  3. Install Microsoft Exchange System Manager and apply the Microsoft Exchange service pack on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  4. Verify that the version of the mapi32.dll file corresponds with the version in Microsoft Exchange.
  5. Continue or re-run the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process.
Resolution 2
  1. If Microsoft Outlook is not installed on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, install Microsoft Exchange System Manager and apply the service pack for Microsoft Exchange.
  2. After successfully installing Microsoft Exchange System Manager, the current version of the MAPI32.dll file will be replaced.

Workaround

If the issue is still unresolved, repair the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation by completing the following steps:
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  2. From the list of programs, locate and highlight BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange and select Support Information.
  3. Click Repair and follow the prompts for the repair.
  4. Resolve the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile.
