Default KB15582 - BES may not work correctly in Exchange 2007 without public folders

KB15582 - BlackBerry Enterprise Server may not work correctly in Microsoft Exchange 2007 environments without public folders

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 to 4.1.6
  • Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007

Overview

The following error message appears in the BlackBerry Messaging Agent (MAGT) log entry during calendar lookup operations:
[Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store - [MAPI_E_FAILONEPROVIDER(8004011D)]]

Cause

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 can be installed without public folders for environments with Microsoft® Outlook® 2007 and later as the messaging application. By default, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server requires public folder access. If public folders are not present, some functionality might be lost.

Resolution

Create a public folder storage group and database on the Microsoft Exchange Server. For more information on installing public folders in a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment, visit the Microsoft Help and Support website.
Note: This resolution will be difficult to undo if the decision is made to not have public folders in the Microsoft Exchange environment.

Workaround

Note: BlackBerry smartphone users will not be able to use the Calendar lookup function on their BlackBerry smartphones. Public folders are required for this feature to work.
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
To work around this issue, complete the following steps:
  1. Configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to connect to the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 without requiring public folders.
  2. Open the Registry Editor.
  3. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging Subsystem\CDO. If the CDO entry does not exist then add the key by right clicking on the Windows Messaging Subsystem key.
  4. Within the registry key, create a Dword called Ignore No PF and assign it a decimal value of 1.
  5. Save the changes and then close the Registry Editor. Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
  6. Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services.
  7. Restart BlackBerry Manager.
Note: No change is required for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with public folders. If you are using Microsoft Exchange with public folders, and a similar error is present, see KB00886.

It can. The BES accesses the public folder free/busy data to report back availability.

As far as accessing other public folder data, no not yet ... but why do you care anyway; you don't have a BB
