KB02740 - Generate a new encryption key


Environment

  • BlackBerry® Desktop Manager
  • BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 and later
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and later
  • BlackBerry smartphone



Overview

A new encryption key can be generated using one of the following methods:
  1. BlackBerry smartphone
  2. BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  3. BlackBerry Enterprise Server

BlackBerry smartphone

To generate a new encryption key using a BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:
Note: The following procedure requires BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.0 or later and BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 or later.
  1. From the Home screen, click Options, or click Settings and then Options (depending on the theme you are running on your BlackBerry smartphone).
  2. If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 4.0, click Security. If you are running BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 or later, click Security Options and then General Settings.
  3. In the Service section, display the menu and click Regenerate Encryption Key.
  4. When the message The key for service has been updated appears, click OK.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager

To generate a new encryption key using BlackBerry Desktop Manager, complete the following steps:
  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
  2. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, double-click Redirector Settings.
  3. In the Redirector Settings window, click the Security tab.
  4. Select Generate keys manually, then click Generate. The Generating New Key window appears.
  5. Move the mouse around until the Generating New Key window closes. A new encryption key has been generated.
  6. If you want to be prompted to generate a new encryption key every 31 days, select Generate keys automatically.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server

To generate a new encryption key using BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 for Microsoft® Exchange, complete the following steps:
  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  2. Open BlackBerry Manager.
  3. Right-click and choose Properties from the menu.
  4. Click the Port tab and select COM or USB. Alternatively, to find the BlackBerry smartphone connection automatically, click Detect.
  5. Click OK in the dialog box asking you to verify that the BlackBerry smartphone is connected. A new window appears notifying you that the BlackBerry smartphone has been found. It also displays the BlackBerry smartphone user's personal identification number (PIN).
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select the BlackBerry smartphone user's account.
  8. Right-click and select Properties.
  9. Click the Security tab and select Generate keys manually.
  10. Click Generate and move the mouse around.
  11. Click Apply to change the status from Pending update to Up to date, then click OK.
To generate a new encryption key using BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1 and later, complete the following steps:
  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  2. Open BlackBerry Manager.
  3. Select Local Ports (Device Management) and verify that the BlackBerry smartphone has been detected.
  4. Choose the server name and select the Users tab.
  5. Select the account that you would like to assign the BlackBerry smartphone to.
  6. Expand the Device Management menu.
  7. Click Assign Device.
  8. Select the connected BlackBerry smartphone to assign to the account.
  9. Click OK to assign the BlackBerry smartphone.
