KB04828 - HTTP Error 503: Service Unavailable
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1
- BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 to 4.7
- BlackBerry® Internet Service
- BlackBerry smartphone
Overview
When the BlackBerry smartphone user attempts to open a web page using the BlackBerry® Browser, the following error message is displayed:
HTTP Error 503: Service Unavailable
Cause
This issue can be caused by one of the following:
- The BlackBerry® Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) is not turned on for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry smartphone user account.
- The web site that the BlackBerry smartphone user is attempting to access is not available. For example, the proxy server is not configured to allow access to that web site.
- Typing an incomplete web address caused an error when attempting to browse the Internet.
- The default browser configuration is set to an incorrect browser.
Resolution
Complete the appropriate resolution for your cause.
Cause 1
The BlackBerry Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) is not turned on for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry smartphone user account.
Resolution 1
Turn on the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server by completing the following steps:
- Click the Server Configuration tab.
- Expand Service Control & Customization.
- Click BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.
To enable the BlackBerry MDS for the BlackBerry smartphone user account, follow these steps:
- Click the User Configuration tab.
- Select the BlackBerry smartphone user account.
- Expand Service Access and click Enable Connection and Collaboration Services.
Cause 2
The web site that the BlackBerry smartphone user is attempting to access is not available. For example, the proxy server is not configured to allow access to that web site.
Resolution 2
On the Proxy tab of the Mobile Data Service Properties window, set a Proxy Mapping exception. For instructions, see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1 System Administration Guide.
Cause 3
Typing an incomplete web address caused an error when attempting to browse the Internet.
Resolution 3
Make sure that the complete web address has been typed, including the domain. For example, http://www.blackberry is an incomplete web address. The correct address is http://www.blackberry.com.
Cause 4
The default browser configuration is set to an incorrect browser.
Resolution 4
Configure the default browser option using the correct browser.
- On the BlackBerry smartphone, open the Browser application.
- Display the menu and select Options.
- Click General Properties.
- Make sure that the Default Browser is set to the correct browser.
- Display the menu and select Close. Note: When the BlackBerry smartphone is not associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the default browser should be set to Internet Browser.
