KB17353 - How to update previously deployed third-party applications to BlackBerry
KB17353 - How to update previously deployed third-party applications to BlackBerry smartphones
Environment
- BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 or later
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 or later
Overview
A third-party application was previously deployed through a software configuration and an update to the application is required.
Resolution
To update a third-party application, complete the following steps:
- Delete the contents of the third-party application from the current folder, and copy the new application file into that folder.
- From a command prompt, go to :\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader.
- Run the command loader /index.
- Go to the Applications\ folder created in step 2 and confirm that the pkgdbcache.xml and specification.pkg files exist.
When the steps are completed the following occurs:
- The application is listed under the Software Configuration with the same settings as the old version of the application.
- The updated application is picked up on the next poll interval and sent out to the BlackBerry smartphone.
- The IT Policy arrives on the BlackBerry smartphone first and is updated.
- The Application Control Policy is re-read and all permissions are re-generated.
- The “required” is removed from the old version of the third-party application, so the old modules are now able to be overwritten. The application is received by the BlackBerry smartphone and the BlackBerry smartphone sends an acknowledgement back to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to let it know it has received the packet.
- The third-party application is then installed on the BlackBerry smartphone. Modules with the same name are overwritten whenever possible, otherwise a reset is required and the BlackBerry smartphone user is prompted to reset the BlackBerry smartphone. The old modules have to be overwritten before the updated application is used.
- Once installed, an acknowdgement is sent back to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server indicating success or failure.
