KB15454 - How to optimize antivirus software on BlackBerry Enterprise Server
KB15454 - How to optimize antivirus software on BlackBerry Enterprise Server
Environment
- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
Overview
This article explains the interaction of the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server with email messages and messaging servers. The article is intended for administrators who implement antivirus software and may not be BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators. The information provided helps in the performance tuning of antivirus software by helping to understand the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and reduced exposure to viruses.
About the BlackBerry Enterprise Server
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino has several services and tasks. Some Windows Services are written in Java® and C++. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent is a C++ add-in task that runs on the IBM Lotus Domino server. The BlackBerry Messaging Agent periodically checks the BlackBerry smartphone user's mail file for new email messages. When a new email message is found, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent retrieves the entire email message in Notes Storage Format (NSF note) to memory. Once the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has processed the email message and a likeness of the email message directed to the BlackBerry smartphone, the in-memory NSF note is discarded. A BlackBerry State database exists for every BlackBerry smartphone user account. The BlackBerry State database is used to track the state of email messages between the BlackBerry smartphone user's mail file and their BlackBerry smartphone.
A BlackBerry Enterprise Server should have antivirus software to ensure that the operating system and system memory are free of viruses before the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services start.
Antivirus software running on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server for IBM Lotus Domino is not required to scan the BlackBerry State databases in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server State folder.
If the IBM Lotus Domino messaging server has antivirus scanning enabled, consider reducing the intensity or aggressiveness of the antivirus scanning on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
