Default KB14757 - Japanese characters do not display correctly in the calendar items for BB

KB14757 - Japanese characters do not display correctly in the calendar items for BlackBerry smartphone users

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0 for Microsoft® Exchange
  • Microsoft® Exchange 5.5 SP4, 2000 and 2003
  • SDR35424

Overview

Japanese characters are not displayed correctly in the calendar items for BlackBerry enabled users. The characters are displayed as ?????. However, Japanese characters display correctly in the body of email messages in Microsoft® Outlook® and on the BlackBerry smartphone.
Meeting invitations sent or accepted to or from a BlackBerry smartphone with the environments listed in the Environments field get the following results:
  • Meeting invitation displays Japanese characters incorrectly in the BlackBerry smartphone Calendar
  • Accepted meeting displays Japanese characters incorrectly in the BlackBerry smartphone Calendar
  • Accepted meeting displays Japanese characters incorrectly in the Microsoft Outlook calendar items

Resolution

This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.

Workaround

If you are using Microsoft Exchange 2003 and use Unicode text in calendars then you will need to install two Microsoft hotfixes. Please use the following search terms on the Microsoft Support Knowledge Base to locate hotfixes 260293 and 258753:
  • Chinese text in the Subject box is corrupted when an appointment item is updated using CDO version 1.21 in Exchange 2003
  • The information store service stops responding when you use a CDO 1.21 based program that uses the SetLocaleIDs method to set the code page of a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) session in Exchange Server 2003 SP2
Warning: The following procedure involves modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Windows® operating system. Document and back up the registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.

After installing the appropriate hotfixes, configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to support Unicode text in calendars by making the following modification:
  1. On the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, open the Registry Editor.
  2. In the left pane, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
  3. Right-click Agents.
  4. Click New > DWORD Value.
  5. Create a DWORD value named SetLocaleIDs.
  6. Set the Value data to 1.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close the Registry Editor.
  9. In the Windows Services, restart the BlackBerry Controller to restart the Messaging Agent.
